What training do you need as a Field Service Technician in Switzerland?
The standard path leads through a technical EFZ — usually as an electronics technician, automation technician, polymechanic or electrician — supplemented by higher vocational training and industry-specific permits.
State your EFZ with its full title, the industry of your training company and the year of completion. Many service organisations filter applications specifically for this credential, since customer installations require electrical work. If you took the path via the Berufsmaturität or a second qualification, list both chronologically so no gap appears.
Add further training that is actually required in field service: Systems Engineering Technician HF, Service Technician with a Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training, Maintenance Specialist or an Automation Specialist qualification. Permits are decisive for work on customer installations — the installation permit per NIV, the live-working instruction per SN EN 50110-1, or industry-specific manufacturer certificates belong in their own block with the year stated.
Depending on the industry, further regulatory evidence is required: ISO 13485 and MDR in medical technology, GMP and hygiene training in the food industry, the Machinery Directive with SN EN 60204-1 and SN EN ISO 13849 in plant engineering. A category B driving licence and Suva certificates for aerial work platforms or forklifts may seem trivial, but they are missing from many CVs and are relevant for deployment planning.
How do you present your professional experience as a Field Service Technician convincingly?
For each position, first describe your service area and portfolio, then three to four results with metrics from day-to-day service work.
Add a brief context sentence above each position: service region, number of systems managed, customer type, SLA response time, standby rota and travel percentage. This lets a service manager immediately assess whether you are familiar with 8-hour SLAs in hospitals or with scheduled maintenance in industrial operations. Without this framing, your tasks remain interchangeable.
Quantify using the metrics that are measured in field service: First Time Fix Rate, MTTR, number of call-outs per year, SLA achievement rate, share of tickets resolved remotely, value of the spare parts inventory carried, and revenue from service contracts in CHF with the apostrophe, for example CHF 610'000. Phrase it as result plus action: what you changed and which figure moved as a result.
Also show the commercial and documentation side. Service reports, maintenance logs, calibration certificates, spare parts quotes and contract renewals are part of the role. If you led commissionings with acceptance protocols, weekend-window retrofits or customer training, state the number and duration — this sets you apart from candidates who merely repair.
How long should the CV be, and does it need a photo?
Two pages are the Swiss standard, and a professional photo is customary and expected, even though it is not a legal requirement.
Keep to two pages: profile, at-a-glance metrics, three to four relevant positions with results, skills, tools, education, certificates and languages. Summarise positions from more than 15 years ago in a single line. Use the term CV consistently throughout, not resume, and a calm, easy-to-read layout without graphic bars for competencies.
A professional portrait photo in the top right corner is standard convention in Switzerland. Also expected are your place of residence with canton, nationality or residence permit (B, C, G for cross-border commuters), driving licence and availability. For field service positions, place of residence is a hard criterion because it determines the service area and travel times — so also state your willingness for standby duty and overnight stays.
Adapt the order and wording to the job posting: a job ad mentioning Salesforce Field Service, ServiceMax or SAP FSM should find the corresponding system reflected in your tools block. Attach reference letters, diplomas and permits as a separate PDF, and state a realistic salary expectation if requested — experienced Field Service Technicians typically earn between CHF 85'000 and CHF 110'000 per year, depending on industry and standby share.

Marco Brunner
Field Service Technician Medical Technology · Electronics Technician EFZ, Systems Engineering Technician HF
Field Service Technician with 12 years of on-site experience with laboratory and packaging equipment in German-speaking Switzerland and Ticino. Responsible for an equipment portfolio of 180 systems with 8-hour SLA response times, standby duty and complete IQ/OQ documentation per ISO 13485. Combines fault-finding on Siemens S7 controllers with final inspections per NIN 2020 and customer training directly with end users.
What sets me apart
First Time Fix Rate instead of pure call volume: Documents every call in SAP Field Service Management with fault code and root-cause class; the resulting spare parts kit adjustments raised the First Time Fix Rate from 71 to 89 percent.
Regulatory-compliant service: Performs Installation Qualification and Operational Qualification (IQ/OQ) on analytical instruments per ISO 13485 and MDR, including calibration with METAS-traceable references and complete equipment logs.
Electrical safety on site: Final inspection and measurement report per NIN 2020 with a Fluke 1664 FC, live working per SN EN 50110-1, machine safety per SN EN 60204-1 on retrofits.
Remote first, on-site only when necessary: Set up IoT remote access to 96 systems and resolved 34 percent of tickets without a site visit — saving 1'900 kilometres of driving per month and reducing customer downtime.
Key achievements
MTTR halved. Reduced mean time to repair in the hospital laboratory portfolio from 6.5 to 3.2 hours, cutting 12 annual SLA breaches down to zero.
Increased service contract revenue. Upgraded maintenance contracts from basic to full-service for 41 customers: recurring revenue grew from CHF 420'000 to CHF 610'000 in 24 months.
Retrofit programme without production downtime. Converted 12 packaging lines to a new safety controller, each within a 16-hour weekend window, subsequently lowering the reject rate by 7 percent.
