Which qualification belongs in a Maintenance Technician CV?
State your EFZ first, then further training such as the Federal Professional Certificate or the HF technician diploma, and only then course certificates.
In Switzerland, the basis is almost always a technical EFZ: Polymechanic EFZ, Automation Technician EFZ, Electronics Technician EFZ, Plant and Equipment Constructor EFZ, or Maintenance Specialist EFZ. Write the title exactly as it appears on your certificate of proficiency, and add the training company and year of completion. HR staff in industry often filter by these terms, so paraphrases such as 'mechanic apprenticeship' will cost you points.
For positions with a planning or leadership component, higher vocational education counts: Maintenance Specialist with Federal Professional Certificate, Production Specialist with Federal Professional Certificate, Electrical Safety Advisor with Federal Professional Certificate, or Certified HF Technician in Systems Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. If you are currently pursuing such further training, state the planned qualification with the year, for example 'Maintenance Specialist with Federal Professional Certificate, expected completion 2026.'
For foreign qualifications, include SBFI recognition or a level assessment and translate the title accordingly, for example 'Industrial Mechanic (DE), comparable to Polymechanic EFZ.' Certificates such as low-voltage switching authorization according to NIV, refrigerant handling competence according to ChemRRV, SUVA forklift licence, crane operator licence, PSAgA, or vibration analysis according to ISO 18436-2 belong in a separate section with the year, since many of these need to be renewed periodically.
How do I describe my work experience with convincing figures?
Describe the equipment portfolio for each position and back up your impact with maintenance KPIs such as MTBF, MTTR, OEE or maintenance costs.
Add a context line under each position with the hard facts: number and type of equipment, industry, shift model, team size and budget. 'Responsible for 42 GMP packaging lines in 24/5 operation, maintenance budget CHF 1.4 million' says more than any task list. Add whether you worked in a food, pharma, chemical, metal or building-services environment, because hygienic design, GMP and Ex zones each have different requirements.
Then formulate three to four achievements with KPIs from SN EN 15341: availability, MTBF, MTTR, planning ratio, share of planned work, OEE improvement, reduced downtime costs, or reduced inventory value. Also mention your methods - TPM, RCM, FMEA, 5S, SMED, root cause analysis with 5-Why or Ishikawa - and the CMMS you worked with, such as SAP PM, IBM Maximo, or an industry-standard maintenance software.
Your availability and authorizations also matter to Swiss employers: mention on-call models you have experienced (for example 1:4), willingness to work nights and weekends, and experience with plant shutdowns and overhauls including coordination of external contractors. If you have supervised apprentices, conducted safety instructions or prepared investment requests over CHF 100'000, this also belongs among your achievement points.
How long should the CV be and does it need a photo?
Two pages are standard, a professional photo is customary but optional in Switzerland, and details on residence permit, place of residence and driving licence are expected.
Keep the CV to a maximum of two pages: profile, KPIs at a glance, work experience of the last 10 to 15 years, education, certificates, languages and IT skills. Summarize older positions in one line. Save the file as a PDF with a clean name such as 'CV_Marco_Braendli_Maintenance_Technician.pdf' and avoid fancy graphics so that applicant tracking systems can read the text correctly.
A photo is not legally required but is often expected in Swiss industry: neutral background, work clothing or a shirt, friendly and up to date. State your place of residence, citizenship or permit type (B, C, G for cross-border commuters), mobile number and email in the header. In shift operations, place of residence is particularly relevant, because companies want to estimate travel time for on-call callouts - a note such as 'On-call availability within 30 minutes' helps.
Also typically Swiss is the dossier: certificates and diplomas are attached separately, work references count for more than reference lists, and you should only provide references with their consent or upon request. State your earliest possible starting date and notice period. Only comment on salary if asked; realistic ranges for maintenance technicians, depending on region, shift allowances and industry, lie roughly between CHF 78'000 and CHF 105'000 per year.
