What qualification do I need as a Design Engineer in Switzerland?
The classic entry route is the four-year basic training as a Design Engineer EFZ, supplemented by further training as a Technician HF Mechanical Engineering or a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
State your qualification exactly as it appears on your certificate: 'Design Engineer EFZ', 'Dipl. Techniker HF Mechanical Engineering' or 'BSc FHNW in Mechanical Engineering Technology'. HR managers in mechanical engineering know these titles and can immediately gauge your level. Avoid vague phrases such as 'training in a technical field', as this reveals neither your drafting skills nor your level of calculation expertise.
If you hold a foreign qualification, for example as a Mechanical Engineer or Technical Systems Planner from Germany, add a note on recognition by the SBFI or swissuniversities. Also state your residence and work permit status, for example 'Permanent residence permit C' or 'Residence permit B, EU/EFTA'. This avoids follow-up questions and makes your application immediately usable for SMEs.
More important than the title alone is the combination with specialist certificates. CSWP or CSWE for SolidWorks, a course in geometrical tolerancing according to ISO 1101, fundamentals of risk assessment according to EN ISO 12100, or FEM continuing education show that you think beyond pure modelling. Place these certificates with the year in a separate block so they don't get lost when skimmed.
How do I present my professional experience as a Design Engineer convincingly?
For each position, describe the product, batch size and complexity of your assemblies, and back up your impact with figures on cost, time or quality.
The context determines whether your experience is a good fit. Special-purpose machinery with batch size 1 requires different skills than series design with injection moulding and tooling costs. Therefore, write one line under each position describing the environment: industry, number of employees, product type and typical quantities. Add the scale of your assemblies, for example 'assemblies with up to 3'800 individual parts' or 'frame structures up to 2.4 tonnes'.
Then formulate three to four measurable bullet points. Good examples are reduced production costs in francs, reduced design hours per order, shortened change throughput times in working days, number of released drawings, or a reduced rework rate in percent. A bullet point such as 'creating drawings' says nothing, because it applies to every design engineer.
Also show the breadth of your work beyond CAD. This includes standard parts selection, strength and drive design calculations, first sample inspection, supplier discussions, bill of materials maintenance in ERP, and technical documentation according to Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. Employers are looking for design engineers who see an assembly through to production readiness and the declaration of conformity, not just to the rendering stage.
How long should the CV be, and is a photo required?
Two pages are the standard; a professional portrait photo is still customary in Switzerland and is expected by most industrial companies.
Keep to two A4 pages, even after fifteen years of professional experience. Give the most space to your last three positions, and summarise older roles in a single line. A cover sheet is unnecessary; invest the space instead in a skills block covering CAD systems, standards knowledge and manufacturing processes, which is what your readers look for first.
For the photo: a professional shot in a shirt or polo, neutral background, no holiday snapshot. In the header, add your place of residence including canton, your citizenship or permit status, and a note on mobility, such as a category B driving licence. For positions in Central and Eastern Switzerland, the commute is a genuine selection criterion.
Two Swiss particulars round off the dossier. First, language skills with level and practical relevance, for example 'English B2, technical specifications and supplier correspondence'. Second, a note on available reference letters and your notice period, as well as a realistic salary expectation if requested: for design engineers with an EFZ and a few years of experience, the range is usually between CHF 85'000 and CHF 110'000 per year, depending on region and responsibility. Send the dossier as a single PDF file with a clean file name.

Design Engineer with 9 years of experience in the 3D design of special-purpose machinery and assemblies for the packaging and medical technology industries. I manage projects from the initial concept sketch through calculations and standard parts selection to production-ready drawings in accordance with ISO 2768 and ISO 1101.
