What Qualification Is Expected for Cloud Roles in Switzerland?
Common paths include an IT Specialist EFZ with further training, a Technician HF Computer Science diploma, or a BSc FH/ETH in Computer Science - current vendor certifications are equally decisive.
The classic Swiss career path begins with an apprenticeship as an IT Specialist EFZ (specializing in Platform Development or Systems Engineering) and continues via the Federal Professional Certificate in ICT (Fachausweis, e.g. ICT Systems and Network Engineering) or the Technician HF Computer Science diploma. Equally common is a Bachelor's degree (FH) in Computer Science, Business Information Technology, or Information Technology, sometimes combined with a CAS in Cloud Computing or a CAS in DevOps from a university of applied sciences. State your degree, specialization, school and year - Swiss HR professionals clearly distinguish between EFZ, HF, Fachausweis and FH diploma.
For cloud roles, certifications often carry more weight than the academic degree, because they demonstrate that your knowledge matches the current platform generation. List AWS Solutions Architect (Associate or Professional), Microsoft Certified Azure Administrator or Solutions Architect Expert, CKA/CKAD, Terraform Associate, or FinOps Certified Practitioner with the year and, where relevant, the recertification date. Expired certifications without renewal tend to work against you in postings for senior roles.
If you hold a foreign degree, add a note on recognition (SBFI or Swiss ENIC) as well as your residence status, such as 'Settlement Permit C' or 'EU/EFTA, Permit B'. For mandates with banks, insurers and public administration, it also matters whether you have already gone through a security clearance or screening process; a brief note saves follow-up questions.
How Do I Build a Convincing Work Experience Section as a Cloud Engineer?
For each role, describe the platform, its size, and your measurable results in availability, automation level, security and cost.
Under each position, add two lines of context: industry, team and platform size, and regulatory framework. 'Multi-cloud operations with 140 subscriptions, 14 Kubernetes clusters and 240 microservices under FINMA Circular 2018/3' says more than a list of technologies. Follow this with three to four bullet points containing figures: IaC coverage in percent, deployment frequency, MTTR, availability against SLA, number of resolved CIS findings, or savings in CHF.
Avoid tool lists without impact. Instead of 'Terraform, Kubernetes, Grafana', write what you achieved with them: 'Built a Terraform module library with 38 modules, cutting onboarding time for a new environment from 9 days to 4 hours.' Clearly position your role - platform engineering, migration, SRE operations with on-call duty, or architecture with cost responsibility - because Swiss job profiles distinguish these tasks clearly, including in salary bands.
Add a compact technology block organized by cloud platform, IaC, containers, CI/CD, observability and security, so you make it through the pre-selection in the applicant tracking system. If you work in consulting or on a project basis, list mandates by industry, duration and result rather than every client name - for regulated clients, a description such as 'Swiss cantonal bank, 8 months' is sufficient.
How Long Should the CV Be, and Does It Need a Photo?
Two pages is standard; three are acceptable with over ten years of cloud and project experience. A photo is optional but still common in Switzerland.
Stick to two pages: profile, quick overview, work experience with figures, technology block, education, certificates, languages. For a long career, condense positions older than twelve years into one line each. Save the CV as a PDF with a filename such as 'CV_Marc_Stauffiger_Cloud_Architect.pdf' and avoid multi-column layouts, graphic skill bars, and icons that are misread by parsing systems.
A professional headshot is common in Switzerland and expected by many HR departments, though it is not legally required. Also common: place of residence with canton, nationality or permit type, year of birth, and details on on-call availability and start date including notice period. For workload, write clearly '80-100 percent' and state your salary expectations only if the posting requires it - for senior cloud roles in the Zurich area, this typically ranges between CHF 120'000 and CHF 155'000 per year.
Languages should be listed with CEFR levels, since many platform teams work in English while steering committees meet in German or French. Add verifiable evidence such as a public Git profile, a blog post on Terraform modules, or a talk at a Swiss meetup - such references replace claims and are often used as a starting point in the technical interview.
