What qualifications do you need as a Conversational Designer in Switzerland?
There is no protected job title, but language- or interaction-related qualifications plus demonstrable NLU experience are in demand.
Swiss job postings most commonly show three paths: a degree in computational linguistics or language technology (University of Zurich, University of Geneva), a degree in interaction design, digital ideation, or communication at a university of applied sciences (ZHAW, HSLU, FHNW, HKB), or a career change from UX writing, contact center work, or process management. It is important to link your degree in the CV to the part relevant to the role: mention your thesis on speech acts, corpus analysis, or language models rather than just the degree title.
In Switzerland, part-time further education counts as a strong complement: CAS Human Computer Interaction Design (OST), CAS Artificial Intelligence Management (HSLU), MAS Interaction Design (affiliated with ZHdK), or CAS Digital Product Management (HWZ). Platform certifications such as Cognigy.AI Certified Professional, Rasa Developer Certification, Google Cloud Dialogflow CX, or Microsoft Copilot Studio show that you know a production system rather than just prototypes. Add the UXQB certificate CPUX-F if you moderate usability tests yourself.
List your qualifications chronologically with institution and year, and mark foreign diplomas with a note on recognition by Swissuniversities or the SBFI, if you have one. For applications in the financial or healthcare sector, a line on your compliance knowledge is worthwhile: revDSG, processing register, FINMA circulars on outsourcing, or requirements under the EPDG. This combination of language skills, tool certification, and regulatory knowledge sets you apart from purely text-focused profiles.
How do you build professional experience in conversation design without a bot project?
Show measurable dialogue work, even if it comes from prototypes, contact center data, or volunteer projects.
Start with material that already exists: chat transcripts, call logs, FAQ pages, and ticket categories. From 500 real inquiries, derive an intent taxonomy, utterance lists, and three happy paths, then build a prototype in Voiceflow, Dialogflow CX, or the free version of Rasa. Describe exactly this chain - data analysis, intent model, dialogue flow, testing - in your CV, since it is the daily workflow of the role.
Then quantify every point. Instead of 'developed a chatbot,' write 'bot with 42 intents, F1 0.89, 68% correct first response with 15 test users.' Meaningful metrics in conversation design include containment rate, fallback rate, handover rate, task completion, CSAT, average turns per session, and, for voice bots, word error rate. Add language coverage (DE/FR/IT/EN) and dialect handling, since multilingual bots are the rule rather than the exception in Switzerland.
Use intermediate roles as a stepping stone: positions in the contact center, as a UX writer, service designer, process owner, or content manager provide the domain knowledge employers look for. Keep a small portfolio ready with two to three dialogue excerpts, a flowchart, and a test report, and link it in your CV. An internship or mandate with a digital agency, a health insurer, or a cantonal administration gives you your first reference with a live production system.
How long should the CV be, does it need a photo, and what is Swiss-specific?
Two pages, a professional photo, and clear information on permit, languages, and availability are standard in Switzerland.
Keep your CV to two pages: profile, at-a-glance metrics, work experience with quantified points, skills and tools, education, certificates, languages. A photo is still customary in Switzerland and expected by most recruiters; choose a current, professional portrait. Year of birth and marital status are optional, while place of residence, work permit or citizenship, and earliest possible starting date belong in the header.
Make your language skills precise, since they are a production factor in this role: state levels according to the CEFR and specify in which languages you can write, edit, or only approve dialogues yourself. If you are confident in Swiss German, note it explicitly along with the region, since dialect ASR and tone are a genuine differentiator for voice bots. If you want to work in French-speaking Switzerland or Ticino, adjust the language order and, if possible, the language of the document.
List the systems in your CV with version or configuration details (Cognigy.AI, Rasa Pro, Dialogflow CX, Copilot Studio, Botium, Genesys or Salesforce integration) and the data location if you have worked on projects with Swiss hosting. Mention salary expectations only if requested; for experienced conversational designers, the range is roughly CHF 95'000 to CHF 135'000 depending on region and industry. Save the document as a PDF with the naming convention LastName_FirstName_CV.pdf and attach reference letters as a separate enclosure.

Nadine Bruggisser
Conversational Designer (Voice & Chat), MSc Computational Linguistics UZH, CPUX-F
Conversational Designer with seven years of experience designing chat and voice bots for banks, insurers, and public administrations in Switzerland. I am responsible for the entire dialogue lifecycle, from intent taxonomy and happy-path scripts to prompt and RAG design and weekly conversation analytics reviews. My focus areas are multilingual bots (DE/FR/IT/EN), Swiss German ASR tuning, and implementing revDSG and FINMA outsourcing requirements for bots with data hosted in Swiss data centers.
What sets me apart
Swiss German in Voice Bots: Built a dialect test corpus with 4'200 utterances from five language regions; the ASR word error rate for Swiss German calls dropped from 31% to 17%, and recognition of place names and AHV numbers improved by 24 percentage points.
Four-Language Dialogue Architecture: I maintain intents and utterances in DE/FR/IT/EN in a single-source repository with a terminology list, allowing new use cases to be rolled out in four languages in 6 working days instead of 15.
Compliance-Ready Dialogues: Experience with the revDSG processing register, consent turns, PII masking in transcripts, and FINMA outsourcing documentation; three bot releases passed internal risk and legal review without conditions.
Conversation Analytics Instead of Guesswork: Weekly review of fallback clusters, drop-off turns, and handover reasons; the resulting dialogue changes reduced the fallback rate from 19% to 7% over 12 months.
Key achievements
Service Bot for 1.2 Million Customers. Redesigned 62 dialogue flows for a retail bank: containment 61%, CSAT 4.3 out of 5, relieving the contact center of around 9'400 contacts per month and saving approximately CHF 640'000 per year.
Voice Bot for Appointment Scheduling. Telephone assistant for a cantonal hospital handling 2'800 calls per week; 71% of appointments are booked fully automatically, and average call duration dropped from 3:10 to 1:45 minutes.
Design System for Dialogues. Built a conversation design guide with 38 building blocks for tone, error handling, and escalation; onboarding of new designers shortened from 6 to 2 weeks across 4 teams.
