What qualification do I need as a cleaner in Switzerland?
No formal qualification is required for maintenance cleaning, but with the Building Cleaner EBA certificate or the Building Cleaner EFZ diploma you earn considerably more and reach site responsibility faster.
Many cleaning staff start without formal training and are trained internally. The collective labour agreement (GAV) in the cleaning industry sets out wage categories: unskilled staff in maintenance cleaning often earn between CHF 45'000 and CHF 55'000 per year full-time depending on region and experience, with an EBA or EFZ and site responsibility CHF 58'000 to CHF 68'000 is realistic, and foreman/supervisor roles reach up to around CHF 75'000. So always state your level of training in your CV - even if it was only internal training.
If you do not have a Swiss qualification, state your professional experience in years and square metres as well as all courses completed: machine courses, hygiene training, chemical and dosing training, PPE and occupational safety courses. This further training shows the HR manager that you can read safety data sheets and mix dilutions correctly. That is more concrete than stating that you are clean and reliable.
Also mention your permit or citizenship directly in the header, along with your category B driving licence and your availability for early, evening or night shifts. For cleaning positions covering several sites per round, mobility is a genuine selection criterion, and you save the employer having to ask.
How do I structure work experience in a cleaner's CV?
For each position, describe the site, the area in square metres, the type of cleaning and a measurable result instead of a list of tasks.
For each position, state the type of site - office building, school, hospital, food business, residential property - and the area managed. A sentence such as 'Maintenance cleaning of 9'800 m² of office and sanitary area on the early shift, team of 6' says more than 'Cleaning of offices'. Add the types of cleaning you are proficient in: maintenance cleaning, deep cleaning, post-construction cleaning, move-out cleaning with a handover guarantee, glass cleaning with osmosis water, hard floor care including finishing and crystallising.
Use figures that are understood in the industry: area cleaned per hour, number of patient rooms or apartments per day, number of properties on your round, audit scores from quality control, reduction in complaints, savings on chemicals and materials. Anyone who has completed a night-time deep clean without disrupting operations should back this up with the area and number of nights.
Finally, show your responsibilities: material ordering and stock management, key and alarm responsibility at the site, onboarding new staff, keeping the cleaning and disinfection log, liaison with the caretaker or the client. These points distinguish you from applicants who have only helped out, and open the way to a foreman/supervisor position.
How long should the CV be, and is a photo required?
Two pages are enough; a friendly portrait photo is still customary in Switzerland and is actually an advantage for cleaning positions involving client contact.
Keep the CV to a maximum of two pages and place the three-sentence profile and the at-a-glance summary with area, qualification and languages near the top. HR managers at cleaning companies often review dozens of applications per position and decide in under a minute. A gap-free chronology with month and year is more important than design; avoid unexplained gaps and state interim phases such as temporary assignments openly.
A professional portrait photo in work clothing or neat everyday clothing still comes across positively in Switzerland. Avoid holiday pictures and selfies. Equally important: references with name, position and phone number of supervisors from cleaning sites, ideally two people whom you have asked for permission beforehand.
Tailor your information to the position: for hospital cleaning, put the hygiene plan, disinfection knowledge and isolation cleaning at the front; for a facility services company, machine experience and post-construction cleaning; for residential properties, staircase rounds and move-out cleaning. State your availability start date, your workload in percent and your willingness to work weekends or nights, as these details often decide whether you get invited to an interview.
