What qualification do I need as an Electrical Planner in Switzerland?
The basis is the four-year basic training as Electrical Planner EFZ; for project management roles, employers additionally expect the eidg. Fachausweis as Electrical Project Leader.
Always state the qualification exactly as it is listed by the SBFI: 'Electrical Planner EFZ' and not 'Electrical Draughtsman', even if you trained under the earlier designation. If you completed your training under the previous training ordinance, write 'Electrical Draughtsman EFZ (now Electrical Planner EFZ)' - HR staff at planning offices will immediately recognise the difference and credit your years of professional experience correctly.
For the next level: the eidg. Fachausweis as Electrical Project Leader, together with the required practical experience, entitles you to obtain an installation permit according to NIV Art. 9 within the scope of the respective company. If you hold such a permit or meet the admission requirements, this belongs in the first five lines of your CV, because it has a direct economic value for electrical companies. Further qualifications include the eidg. Diplom as Electrical Installation and Safety Expert as well as a Bachelor's degree (FH) in Building Services Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
Supplement your formal qualification with specialist courses that count in everyday practice: NIN update courses from Electrosuisse, KNX Partner, DIALux, Lightning Protection Specialist according to SN EN 62305, or BIM coordination according to SIA 2051. These credentials clearly distinguish you from candidates who list only the basic qualification and show that you actively keep up with the standards, which change every few years.
How do I present my professional experience as an Electrical Planner convincingly?
For each position, describe the building category, the SIA phases handled and the electrical construction sum - only these three details make your experience comparable.
A sentence like 'planning of electrical systems' says nothing. Instead write: 'Electrical planning for a residential development with 96 apartments, electrical construction sum CHF 2.1 million, SIA phases 32 to 53'. HR staff can immediately read from this whether you are used to new-build or existing buildings, residential construction or complex specialist buildings such as hospitals, data centres and industrial facilities - and whether you only draft plans or also handle tendering and electrical site supervision.
Quantify the elements that matter in the field: number of distribution boards and their rated current, number of KNX or DALI data points, kWp for PV systems, number of charging stations under load management, square metres of floor area, cost accuracy compared to the works contract. No one from another profession can copy such figures, and they show the actual size of your projects.
Make your software and standards expertise concrete instead of listing it as keywords. State which CAD system you work with productively (AutoCAD, Elcad, Revit MEP, Plancal nova), which calculation program you use to prepare NPK cost estimates (Messerli, Sorba, Bauadministration) and which standards you have applied. An office that is currently switching from 2D to BIM is looking for exactly this information.
How long should the CV be and does it need a photo?
Two pages is standard in Switzerland; a professional portrait photo remains customary at planning offices and electrical companies and is usually expected.
Keep your CV to a maximum of two pages and, if needed, add a separate one-page project list. This reference list is a powerful tool in electrical planning: project, location, year of construction, electrical construction sum, your role and the SIA phases handled, one project per line. Building owners and office managers look at exactly this when deciding on a project leader position.
A photo in business attire, friendly and up to date, is part of Swiss convention. Also expected are details on place of residence, nationality or residence permit (B, C, G for cross-border commuters) and the earliest possible starting date, stating your notice period. For positions with on-site presence, also mention your category B driving licence, since you will drive independently to construction sites in the area.
Regarding salary: state an expectation only if asked, and justify it based on your level of responsibility. As an Electrical Planner EFZ with a few years of experience, annual salaries range roughly between CHF 78'000 and CHF 95'000 depending on region and office size; with the eidg. Fachausweis and project leadership responsibility, often between CHF 95'000 and CHF 120'000. Take the region into account, as Zurich, Zug and Basel are significantly above rural locations.
