What education do Swiss employers expect from metrology technicians?
In most job ads, a technical EFZ is the basis; further training in quality or metrology determines the salary level.
The classic foundation is an EFZ as a polymechanic, production mechanic, design engineer or micromechanic. State the training company and year of completion, since HR staff in the Jura arc and the Zurich area immediately associate companies with an industry. Those coming from abroad should add recognition by the SBFI or a level confirmation, so that equivalence is not called into question.
Higher vocational education builds on this: Quality Specialist with Federal Diploma (Fachausweis), Quality Manager with Federal Diploma (eidg. Diplom), certified Technician HF in Mechanical Engineering or Systems Engineering. For accredited measurement rooms, courses on measurement uncertainty according to GUM, on ISO/IEC 17025, and METAS further training on traceability are a genuine differentiator. List these courses with provider and year in the certificates section, not hidden in the body text.
Software and equipment knowledge are also part of the qualification. List specifically which controls and programs you have mastered - Zeiss Calypso, Hexagon PC-DMIS, Mitutoyo MCOSMOS, GOM Inspect, Q-DAS qs-STAT - and which sensors you have worked with (VAST scanning, Renishaw PH10, white light, X-ray CT). A CV that only mentions coordinate measuring technology tells a measurement room manager almost nothing.
How do I convincingly describe my professional experience as a metrology technician?
Describe the product range, tolerance class and quantities for each position - and back up your impact with figures.
Begin each position with two lines of context: industry, company size, certifications (ISO 9001, IATF 16949, ISO 13485) and batch sizes. A metrology technician in watch component supply with tolerances of ± 3 µm works differently than someone in plant engineering with welded structures 4 meters long. Without this framework, no one can assess whether your experience fits the advertised position.
Then formulate three to four points with measurable figures: number of measurement programs created, inspection batches per week, reduced lead time for an initial sample inspection report, number of measuring instruments managed, Cgk values achieved, or reduced complaint costs in Swiss francs. Instead of 'Responsible for measuring equipment monitoring', write: 'Managed 320 measuring instruments in the calibration schedule, increased calibration on-time performance from 82 to 99 percent.'
Also show the interfaces that make your role valuable: collaboration with design engineering on tolerance specification, support for production on process control, participation in 8D reports, customer audits or supplier approvals. Anyone who demonstrates that they translate measurement data into decisions is perceived as a specialist rather than a mere inspector.
How long should the CV be, and is a photo needed in Switzerland?
Two pages are standard; a professional portrait photo remains customary in Switzerland and is usually expected.
Stick to a maximum of two A4 pages, even with 15 years of experience. The last three positions receive detailed points, earlier positions are summarized in one line with role, company and period. Continuous month-by-month dates are mandatory in Switzerland; gaps such as military service, further training or family time should be stated openly in one line - this is not a problem.
In the header, add the information an HR department really needs: place of residence, citizenship or permit (C, B, G cross-border commuter), category B driving licence, and your willingness for shift or on-call duty. For measurement rooms with 2- or 3-shift operation, this note is often decisive. If you want to work in the Biel, Grenchen or Delémont area, state your French skills with the CEFR level.
Submit the CV as a PDF with a clear file name, for example CV_Zbinden_MetrologyTechnician.pdf. Attach references, EFZ, HF diploma and course certificates as a separate PDF.
