Which qualification should appear as a Healthcare Assistant on the CV?
State the Federal Certificate of Proficiency as a Healthcare Assistant exactly, including school, training company and year of completion.
Write out the title in full: "Healthcare Assistant EFZ" (Fachfrau/Fachmann Gesundheit EFZ), along with the vocational school, the training company and the year. HR staff in hospitals, care homes and home care organisations check carefully whether it was an EFZ following three-year basic training, a shortened programme for adults under Article 32 BBV, or a validation of prior learning. All three paths are equivalent, but your prior experience is easier to understand if you name the path taken.
For a diploma obtained abroad, the recognition by the SRK or the SBFI belongs on the CV, including the date and reference number. Without this note, applications often end up on the "unclear" pile. If the process is still ongoing, state this openly, for example "SRK recognition procedure submitted 03/2024, compensatory measures in progress".
Supplement your qualification with the certificates that matter in daily nursing practice: BLS-AED-SRC with validity date, Kinaesthetics, Palliative Care Level A or B1, wound management, the course for vocational trainers. If you are planning further training - the Federal Diploma of Higher Education in long-term care and support, a postgraduate course, or the shortened HF nursing programme - mention this in your profile text. This signals a willingness to develop without appearing overqualified.
How do I present my professional experience as a Healthcare Assistant convincingly?
For each position, describe the setting, the number of people cared for and the delegated procedures you carry out independently.
One sentence about the context makes your experience immediately comparable: acute care or long-term care, number of beds or places, specialty area, documentation system and shift model. So instead of writing "nursing care for residents", write "long-term care facility with 96 places, dementia care unit with 42 residents, assessment using BESA, documentation in Lobos". Those working in a hospital should name the department - surgery, internal medicine, geriatrics, proximity to IMC, or emergency.
Make your skills measurable. Number of people cared for per shift, number of blood draws or dressing changes per month, number of apprentices mentored, number of night shifts per year, percentage reduction in fall or pressure ulcer rates. Such figures set you apart from other candidates who merely copy task lists from the training curriculum. It's important to only list procedures that fall within the FaGe competency profile and were actually delegated to you at your workplace.
Also show responsibility beyond basic care: day-to-day shift lead, primary nursing, materials management, hygiene officer according to Swissnoso guidelines, involvement in CIRS evaluations or in the introduction of a new documentation system. If you have switched between settings, explain the change in half a line - for instance, the move from acute care to long-term care for the sake of relationship-based care. Gaps of more than three months should be stated neutrally, for example maternity leave, a language stay, or caregiving responsibilities.
How long should the CV be and does it need a photo?
Two pages are standard in Swiss nursing, and a professional photo is common and generally expected.
Stick to two pages: the first page with contact details, profile, at-a-glance facts and current position, the second page with further experience, education, certificates, languages and references. Those starting out after their EFZ can manage well with one page, giving more weight to their apprenticeship years, including placement locations and IPA grade. Avoid tables with progress bars for nursing skills; nursing management wants to see concrete actions, not percentages.
A friendly, up-to-date portrait in work attire or understated business clothing is still customary in Switzerland. No one may legally require it, but in practice it increases response rates, especially at care homes and home care organisations with personal first contact. Avoid holiday photos and selfies.
Other Swiss conventions: year of birth, marital status and nationality or residence permit (B, C, G) are optional but frequently included, sparing follow-up questions. Mention a category B driving licence and your own car if applying to a Spitex organisation, as well as your availability for night, weekend and public holiday shifts. Salary expectations do not belong on the CV, but at most in the cover letter if asked; as a Healthcare Assistant with several years of experience, annual salaries typically range between CHF 65'000 and CHF 78'000 depending on canton and employer, higher in roles closer to management.

Melanie Zbinden
Healthcare Assistant EFZ, specialising in long-term care and dementia care
Healthcare Assistant EFZ with eight years of experience in long-term care, acute somatic care and home care (Spitex). Confident in delegated nursing care according to the KLV service catalogue, in blood draws, subcutaneous and intramuscular injections, dressing changes, and in needs assessment using BESA. As a certified vocational trainer, I mentor FaGe and AGS apprentices and regularly take on day-to-day responsibility for the care unit.
What sets me apart
Delegated medical-technical procedures across a broad range: Venous blood draws, subcutaneous and intramuscular injections, insulin administration, capillary blood glucose testing, tube feeding via PEG, urinary catheterisation for female patients and 12-lead ECGs - all procedures within FaGe competencies and according to facility standards.
BESA assessment without corrections: I record care needs and services so that health insurers' classifications hold up: over two years, only 2 of 84 classifications required correction.
Kinaesthetics and movement promotion: Completed the Kinaesthetics Care basic and advanced courses; I instruct team colleagues in transfer techniques and have measurably reduced back strain in the care unit.
Vocational trainer with practical assignment experience: Completed the course for vocational trainers (40 learning hours); I plan practical assignments, conduct progress reviews and help assess the individual practical work (IPA).
Key achievements
Reduced fall rate by 31 percent. Set up a fall prevention project in a care unit with 42 residents: assessment using the Morse scale, hip protectors and night lights. Falls decreased from 29 to 20 incidents per half-year.
Kept new pressure ulcer incidence at zero. Over 14 months, no newly acquired pressure sore of category 2 or above in the unit: Braden assessment on admission, repositioning every 2 hours for 7 at-risk residents, and weekly documented skin checks.
Halved medication errors within the team. Restructured the medication process according to the 6-R rule and introduced double-checking for opioids and insulin; reported CIRS medication incidents dropped from 12 to 5 per year.
