What qualification do you need as a social worker in Switzerland?

Most positions in social services, professional deputyship services and institutions require a Bachelor FH in Social Work with a specialisation in Social Work.

State your qualification exactly as it appears on your diploma, for example 'Bachelor of Science FH in Social Work, specialisation in Social Work', together with the institution and year of graduation. Recognised providers include the FHNW, Hochschule Luzern, ZHAW, BFH and HES-SO. If you hold a Höhere Fachschule diploma in social pedagogy or community animation, you should position yourself differently: state clearly which fields you worked in, and add further training such as a CAS in Child and Adult Protection Law or in Case Management.

If you obtained your diploma abroad, recognition status belongs in your CV. Add a line stating the status of the recognition procedure with the SBFI or the relevant recognition body, as well as your residence permit, for example 'Settlement permit C'. Public social services are bound by municipal requirements and check this point early on, so a clear statement will save you a follow-up query.

Further training is only effective if it matches your field of practice. For economic social assistance, courses on SKOS guidelines, benefit calculation and reimbursement are relevant; for professional deputyship work, the CAS in Child and Adult Protection Law; for addiction support, training in Motivational Interviewing. List three to five certificates with provider and year, and leave out older one-day seminars.

How do you present your work experience as a social worker convincingly?

For each role, describe the context of the organisation and support your work with case numbers, legal bases and results.

Hiring managers in social services want to know how many case files you managed, what type of cases they were, and under which legal basis. So instead of writing 'case management and counselling', write 'managed 92 case files under the Social Assistance Act of the Canton of Zurich, including 18 families under child protection orders'. Add the budget volume if you calculated and ruled on benefit payments, for example around CHF 1'900'000 per year.

Make your fields of practice clearly distinguishable. Social assistance, statutory mandates under the ZGB, school social work, addiction counselling, probation services and hospital social counselling all require different competencies. For each role, therefore, name the typical outputs of your work: rulings, social reports to the KESB, accountability reports, integration agreements, risk reports or requests for cost coverage. This shows that you master the administrative side of the profession and not just counselling.

Finally, demonstrate impact. Good evidence includes case-closure rates from social assistance, placements into employment or training, reduced waiting times in initial intake, on-time reports without being returned, or debts reduced in francs. Two to three such figures per role are enough; mention collaboration with the RAV, IV-Stelle, KJPD, Spitex and schools where it led to a concrete result.

How long should the CV be, and does it need a photo?

Two pages is the standard; a professional portrait photo is still customary in Switzerland and is expected by many social services.

Keep your CV to two pages, even after ten years of practice. Describe current roles with three to four bullet points, older ones in two lines; internships from your studies may be condensed into a single summary line after five years. A professional-quality photo, friendly and dressed appropriately for the work context, remains common practice at municipalities and institutions. Leave it out if a job posting explicitly requests anonymised applications.

Also typically Swiss are clear statements of citizenship or permit status, place of residence, language levels according to the CEFR, and availability. For languages, what matters is what you can actually do in a counselling session: 'French B2, able to conduct counselling sessions' says more than 'good knowledge'. A category B driving licence belongs on your CV if you make home visits, which is often the case in social services and professional deputyship work. Always relate your statements to the permit practice of the canton you are applying in.

Add a short line about your professional stance or the AvenirSocial code of ethics if the position is strongly values-driven, such as in street work or the asylum sector. State references as 'available on request' and clear their release beforehand, as case confidentiality and official secrecy apply. Finally, make sure date formats are consistent, francs use the apostrophe, and the file name follows a pattern such as 'CV_Brunner_Nadine.pdf'.

Nadine Brunner

Social Worker BSc FH, Specialist in Social Assistance and Statutory Mandates

Social worker with a Bachelor FH and nine years of experience in economic social assistance, in child and adult protection authorities, and in open youth work. I currently manage 92 case files under the Social Assistance Act of the Canton of Zurich and SKOS guidelines, while concurrently supervising 14 deputyships under Art. 393-398 ZGB. My strength lies in combining legally sound case management with motivational interviewing that measurably returns clients to employment or training.

What sets me apart

Legally sound case management: I independently prepare rulings, SKOS-based budget calculations and reimbursement decisions; of 47 appealable decisions in 2023, only 2 were amended on appeal.

Mandate management under ZGB: Deputyships including accountability reports and inventories for the KESB; all 14 reports submitted on time over three years without being returned.

Employment integration with impact: Collaboration with the RAV, IV-Stelle and integration programmes; 31 clients placed into employment or EBA training over two years.

Network in child protection: Risk reports, child protection assessments and support conferences with schools, KJPD and Spitex; structured assessments using the Bern Assessment Instrument.

Key achievements

Increased case-closure rate from social assistance. Through systematic review meetings every six weeks, closed 24 case files per year, equivalent to 26 percent of the caseload and around CHF 480'000 less in benefit payments.

Halved waiting time in initial intake. Developed a triage grid for new registrations; time from registration to first interview dropped from 19 to 8 days across 210 new registrations per year.

Built up a specialist child protection team. Established an interdisciplinary case review forum with 6 specialists, discussing 68 cases over two years; reduced the number of unfounded risk reports to the KESB by 22 percent.
