What training do you need to become a retail store manager?
The usual path leads through the EFZ as a Certified Retail Specialist, then the Federal Certificate of Proficiency as a Retail Specialist, and for larger stores, the Federal Diploma as a Retail Manager.
Always state the exact Swiss title in your CV, together with the year of completion and sector, for example 'Certified Retail Specialist EFZ, Food Sector' or 'Retail Specialist with Federal Certificate of Proficiency'. HR staff in retail distinguish very precisely between EBA, EFZ, Federal Certificate of Proficiency and Advanced Federal Diploma, because job levels and salary bands depend on them. If you come from another sector, such as hospitality or commercial training (KV), add the sector-specific courses you have since completed.
Equally important are the small but essential proofs of day-to-day store management: the 40-lesson vocational trainer course if you train apprentices, HACCP or food hygiene training in the food sector, the role of KOPAS under the Suva industry solution, and courses on employment law, ArG rest periods and the GAV Detailhandel. These certificates show that you can run a store in a legally compliant way, not just that you bring sales experience.
If you do not yet hold the Federal Certificate of Proficiency, list the course you are currently taking along with the expected exam date, for example 'Retail Specialist, Federal Certificate of Proficiency, completion planned autumn 2026'. Also add system skills such as SAP Retail, ATOSS or the checkout and reporting system, as these are often more decisive for a job change than an additional diploma title.
How do you present your work experience as a store manager convincingly?
For each position, first describe the size of your area of responsibility, then list three to four results with figures.
A store manager's profile is measured against hard figures: sales area in m², annual revenue in CHF, number of employees and apprentices, number of departments, opening hours including evening and Sunday trading. Add these details as a short context line under the job title. Without this framework, no one can judge whether you ran a neighbourhood store with CHF 4 million in revenue or a shopping centre outlet with CHF 24 million.
Phrase your achievements in the language of retail: revenue development year-on-year, average basket value, revenue per m², gross margin, fresh produce markdown ratio, stocktaking variance as a percentage of revenue, personnel cost ratio, staff turnover, mystery shopping score, and your apprentices' final exam (QV) pass rate. A bullet point such as 'Reduced stocktaking variance from 0.68% to 0.31%, equivalent to around CHF 88'000 per year' has a much stronger impact than 'responsible for stocktaking'.
Also mention projects that go beyond day-to-day operations: store renovation or a new opening, assortment changes based on category management guidelines, introduction of self-checkout, migration to a new inventory management system, or the integration of a click-and-collect or delivery service. Such experience demonstrates that you can manage change during ongoing operations, and that is exactly what sales management is looking for at the next level.
How long should the CV be, and should it include a photo?
Two pages are standard in Swiss retail, and a professional photo remains customary for customer-facing management roles.
Keep to a maximum of two pages: a profile of four to five lines, key figures at a glance, three to four positions in detail, and older positions as single lines only. Focus on clarity rather than design flourishes, since your application is often read on a store computer or on a mobile device. A key figures block in the top right showing revenue volume, team size and floor space replaces half a page of prose.
A current, friendly photo in business attire is well received for store manager positions, since the role has a strong representative aspect. No one may legally require it, but in practice many retail companies expect it. Also state your location, citizenship or residence permit type (for example, permit C), year of birth, category B driving licence, your availability, and your notice period, usually one to three months.
Two further points are typically Swiss: mention your mobility and willingness to switch stores within the region, as well as your language skills with level and context of use, for example 'French B2 for customer conversations and supplier contact'. Reference letters belong in the application dossier, not in the CV; in the CV, it is enough to note that references are available on request.
