Which qualification must be included in an electrician's CV?
State your Electrician EFZ with training company and year of completion, as well as your permit status under NIV - these are the two things HR staff look for first.
Place the Federal Certificate of Proficiency Electrician EFZ at the top of the education section and add the training company, vocational school and years. If you have a foreign qualification, be sure to state whether it has been recognised by the SBFI or whether recognition has been applied for; without this note, your application ends up in the 'no' pile at many companies. Also state the occupation in which you completed your apprenticeship, since Assembly Electrician EFZ, Electrician EFZ and Electronics Technician EFZ have different areas of competence.
The second decisive point is authorisation under the Low-Voltage Installation Ordinance. State clearly whether you hold the practical permit under NIV Art. 13, the installation permit under Art. 9 (practical exam with ESTI) or the inspection permit, or whether you work exclusively under the supervision of an authorised specialist. This detail determines salary band and area of deployment, so it belongs in the 'At a Glance' section and not in the small print.
Document further training with title, provider type and year: Electrical Project Manager, Electrical Safety Advisor, Electrical Installation and Safety Expert, KNX Partner, courses on photovoltaics, charging infrastructure or fire detection systems under VKF. Anyone working towards a higher professional examination should note the current progress with an expected completion date. Avoid collective terms such as 'various courses' - they take up space and say nothing about your level of expertise.
How do I describe my on-site work experience convincingly?
Describe property type, contract volume and your role for each position, and back up every statement with figures from your daily work.
HR staff at installation companies want to know which work you can carry out without needing to ask further questions. Structure your experience by area of activity: rough wiring, distribution board construction, conversions in occupied properties, service and fault repair, periodic inspections, building automation, photovoltaics or charging infrastructure. Be specific: 'Rough wiring of 210 residential units' says more than 'experience in residential construction'.
Quantify using the metrics that matter in the industry: number of properties, residential units, distribution boards and meter locations, rated currents of main distribution boards, contract volume in CHF, assembly hours per property, number of safety records or final inspections per year, team size and number of apprentices supervised. If you do on-call duty, state the rotation and average number of call-outs - this demonstrates resilience and independence.
Mention the standards and systems you actually work with: NIN 2020, NIV, the technical regulations of the relevant grid operator, TN-S conversions, selectivity and short-circuit calculations, measuring instruments such as Metrel or Fluke, and software environments such as ETS for KNX. Add any certificates that broaden your deployment options: category B or BE driving licence, IPAF certificate for mobile elevating work platforms, SUVA fall protection instruction, live working course. Such details often decide who gets invited to an interview.
How long should the CV be and is a photo needed?
Two pages are standard; a professional portrait photo is still customary in Switzerland and is generally expected at trade companies.
Keep to two A4 pages: page one with profile, At a Glance, permit status and the two most recent positions, page two with earlier positions, education, certificates and languages. If you have more than fifteen years of experience, summarise older positions in one short line each. Save the file as a PDF with a clear file name such as 'CV_Zbinden_Electrician.pdf', since many companies print the documents out for team discussions.
A professional portrait photo in work clothes or a shirt creates trust in the Swiss electrical industry. At the top of the CV, add place of residence, nationality or residence permit (B, C, G for cross-border commuters), driving licence and earliest possible start date. Anyone working in or commuting from a border region should state their working radius - companies plan their service routes regionally and value this information.
Your application package should include work references, the EFZ, proof of permit and course certificates as separate PDF attachments. Regarding salary, remain reserved in the CV and only state an expectation if the job posting asks for one; realistic ranges, depending on canton, permit and experience, are around CHF 72'000 to CHF 95'000 per year, with supplements for on-call duty and site management. Also adapt the order of your technical skills to each job posting: a company focused on renovation reads differently than a provider of building automation.

Electrician EFZ with 9 years of experience in new-build, conversion and renovation of residential and commercial properties in the cantons of Bern and Solothurn. I carry out installations independently from rough wiring through to final inspection, prepare measurement and safety records (SiNa), and lead sites with up to 6 employees and apprentices. Familiar with NIN 2020, NIV, local grid operator requirements as well as KNX and smart home systems.
