What qualification is expected for a checkout position in Switzerland?
The most common entry route is the EFZ Retail Specialist or the EBA Retail Assistant qualification, though many branches also hire career changers with proven checkout experience.
If you have completed basic vocational training, write out the title correctly and in full: 'Retail Specialist EFZ, Sales Advice specialisation' or 'Retail Assistant EBA'. These titles are protected and are immediately understood in Swiss retail. Also state the vocational school and year of graduation so that HR staff can verify the information without follow-up questions.
Without a vocational qualification, your CV is by no means without prospects. In that case, put your practical checkout experience front and centre: number of tills in the branch, average receipts per shift, responsibility for till closing and change float. Completed courses such as protection of minors, counterfeit money detection or BLS-AED-SRC belong in a separate 'Certificates' section and show that you know the industry's standard requirements.
Anyone looking to develop further should mention ongoing or completed further training as a Retail Specialist with Federal Professional Certificate (Fachausweis) or as a Retail Manager HFP. This signals that you plan to take on till responsibility or branch deputy roles in the medium term. For applicants without a Swiss passport, the permit (B, C or G) also belongs in the header - retail businesses check this early in the process.
How do I describe checkout work experience convincingly?
Describe the branch context for each position, followed by three to four points with figures on turnover, footfall, cash discrepancy and protection of minors.
Start each entry with a context sentence: branch size in square metres, customer footfall per day, number of staffed and self-checkout tills, and product range (food, non-food, convenience). Only this framework makes your performance figures comparable. A cashier in a railway station branch with 450 receipts per day works differently from someone in a specialist store with high receipt values and many warranty cases.
Then formulate results rather than task lists. 'Cashiering and customer service' says nothing. Meaningful statements include 'daily closing of an average of CHF 58'000.-', 'cash discrepancy under CHF 5.- per month', 'scanning performance of 1'450 items per hour' or '6 out of 6 test purchases passed'. Add responsibility for change ordering, interim cash removal, safe reconciliation and the four-eyes principle - these are the points branch managers pay attention to.
Also show your range of payment methods and systems. Name the checkout system (for example SAP Retail POS), the payment terminals, TWINT, Reka and Lunch-Check, and your experience with self-checkout interventions. If you have onboarded apprentices, created shift schedules or assisted with stocktaking, this belongs in as well: it distinguishes you from applicants who only scan and bag items.
How long should the CV be and does it need a photo?
Two pages is the maximum; a friendly, up-to-date portrait photo is still customary in Swiss retail and is often expected.
Keep the CV to one or two pages. For checkout positions, clarity counts: header with name, place of residence, permit or citizenship, phone and email, then a short profile of three sentences, then work experience in reverse chronological order. Older positions from around ten years back can be shortened to one line so that recent achievements have room.
A photo is still standard in Switzerland and particularly desired in customer-facing retail. Choose a professional shot with a light background and an open facial expression. On the other hand, avoid information that no one may ask for and that plays no role in retail: religion, marital status, details about children or a copy of your ID number do not belong in the CV.
Note a few typical Swiss points: write amounts as CHF 85'000, use month/year for dates, and state your availability and desired workload, for example 80 to 100 percent. Explicitly mention your willingness to work evening, Saturday and Sunday sales shifts, whether you are flexible to work across branches, and which national languages you speak in customer contact - this often determines whether you are invited to an interview.

Sandra Bühlmann
Cashier Supervisor, Retail Specialist EFZ (Sales Advice), Retail Specialist with Federal Professional Certificate (Fachausweis)
Cashier Supervisor with 10 years of experience at staffed and self-checkout tills in branches serving up to 4'800 customers per day. I lead a team of 18 checkout staff, am responsible for till closing, change float and safe reconciliation, and keep the monthly cash discrepancy under CHF 5.-. Protection of minors, counterfeit money detection and a friendly, efficient checkout are not a contradiction for me, but daily routine.
What sets me apart
Till security instead of guesswork: I work with a fixed change float of CHF 300.-, interim cash removals from CHF 1'500.- in the till drawer, and a documented four-eyes principle for safe reconciliation - discrepancies are clarified the same day in the till report.
Protection of minors consistently enforced: Age verification for beer and wine from 16, spirits and tobacco from 18: I check ID whenever in doubt and have anchored the ID requirement so firmly in the team that all test purchases by the Blue Cross were passed.
All payment methods safely under control: Debit and credit cards, TWINT, Reka-Check, Lunch-Check, gift cards and cash including foreign currency Euro - including cancellations, credit notes and returns processing according to branch policy.
Actively managing customer flow: I open and close tills according to the frequency curve, keep waiting times under 4 minutes during peak periods, and call in floaters from sales to the front in case of a backlog.
Key achievements
Cash discrepancy reduced by 78 percent. Through individual till assignment, mandatory handover protocols and monthly short training sessions, the branch's total discrepancy fell from CHF 2'340.- to CHF 510.- per year.
Self-checkout zone successfully introduced. Supported the rollout of 8 SCO terminals: share of self-service receipts increased to 34 percent within 6 months, intervention rate reduced from 21 to 9 percent.
Customer card sign-ups tripled. With a 30-second conversation guide at the till, the number of new customer cards increased from 15 to 47 per month, without extending average checkout time.
