What qualifications are expected for Quality Engineers in Switzerland?

Usually a technical base occupation with an EFZ plus higher vocational education - HF, FH, or the quality courses offered by SAQ QUALICON.

The classic Swiss path begins with an EFZ as a Polymechaniker, Automatiker, plastics technologist, or laboratory technician. This is followed either by studies as a dipl. Techniker HF (mechanical engineering, systems engineering, plastics technology) or a Bachelor FH in systems engineering or mechanical engineering. Both paths are accepted by industrial employers; what matters is that you write the title exactly as it appears on your diploma, for example 'dipl. Techniker HF Mechanical Engineering'.

As an additional qualification, job postings often expect a SAQ QUALICON certification: Quality Technician, Quality Manager, or the federal professional diploma (eidg. Fachausweis). Supplement these with auditor qualifications (internal auditor ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485:2016, VDA 6.3 qualification A/B) as well as a Six Sigma Green or Black Belt. Always state the provider and year so that HR staff can assess how current your qualifications are.

If you come from abroad, state a recognition by the SBFI or a Swiss ENIC assessment, if available. Also indicate your residence status (Swiss citizen, settlement permit C, residence permit B, cross-border commuter permit G) - for positions involving customer audits abroad, willingness to travel and a category B driving licence are also relevant.

How do I describe my professional experience as a Quality Engineer convincingly?

For each position, show the product context, the relevant standards, and three to four results with ppm values, Cpk, lead times, or cost impact in CHF.

Start each position with two lines of context: industry, type of production, batch sizes, number of employees, and the applicable standards environment. A Quality Engineer in medical technology (ISO 13485, MDR, MDSAP) works differently from one in automotive supply (IATF 16949, VDA 6.3, PPAP) or in the food industry (FSSC 22000, HACCP). Without this framework, no one can assess whether your experience is a good fit.

Then quantify consistently. Instead of 'handling complaints', write 'reduced the ppm rate of the three key customers from 2'100 to 1'220, shortened 8D lead time from 41 to 23 days, reduced complaint costs by CHF 310'000 per year'. Other meaningful metrics include Cpk values, scrap and rework rates, first pass yield, number of audits conducted, number of findings, and on-time completion of corrective actions.

Make your tool competence concrete. Name the CAQ system (Babtec, iqs, CASQ-it), the ERP module (SAP QM with inspection lots and QM notifications), the statistics software (Minitab, qs-STAT), and the measurement technology (Zeiss Calypso, Mitutoyo, Keyence, CT scanning). Complement your methodological competence by stating your role - 'FMEA moderator for 9 process FMEAs' says more than just the keyword 'FMEA'.

How long should the CV be, and is a photo required?

Two pages is the standard, and a professional photo is still common in Switzerland and is usually expected.

Keep to two A4 pages. Page one contains contact details, profile, at-a-glance summary, and the most recent position with the strongest figures; page two covers the further positions, education, certificates, languages, and IT skills. A third page is only justifiable from around 15 years of experience with many projects - in that case, summarize positions that are more than 15 years in the past in two lines.

A professional portrait photo in the top right is common practice in Switzerland. Omit details that do not contribute to the assessment, and leave out marital status and religion. Useful information, on the other hand, includes year of birth, place of residence with canton, nationality or permit type, languages with CEFR level, and the notice period or earliest possible start date.

Note regional differences: in French-speaking Switzerland and at international corporations, a French or English version is often required, while in German-speaking Switzerland the German version applies. Attach work references and diplomas as a PDF dossier, as Swiss employers scrutinize interim and final references closely. Only state your salary expectation if explicitly requested, and then as an annual gross figure, for example CHF 105'000 for a 100 percent workload.
