Which qualification belongs in a machine operator's CV?
State your federal qualification exactly and supplement it with machine-specific additional certificates.
In Switzerland several paths lead to this profession: Production Mechanic EFZ (3 years), Plastics Technologist EFZ, Plant and Equipment Constructor EFZ, or the two-year certificate apprenticeship as Mechanics Assistant EBA. Write out the title in full, i.e. 'Production Mechanic EFZ' and not just 'apprenticeship in mechanical engineering'. If you entered the field without a vocational apprenticeship, name your in-house training instead, for example 'internal training as injection moulding machine operator, 18 months' - production HR managers accept this if the machinery and tonnages are stated concretely.
Additional certificates are often decisive for machine operators. List forklift licence (category R1 or R4 per SUVA), overhead crane licence, first-line maintenance or TPM training, as well as GMP, HACCP or ISO 13485 instruction with the year. Anyone wanting to work in food or pharmaceutical production will barely get through screening without hygiene training.
If you have a foreign qualification, add the recognition status, such as 'recognition applied for with SBFI' or 'equivalent to EFZ per confirmation'. Also mention your residence permit status (C, B or G), as shift-based operations want to clarify availability for night and weekend work early on.
How do I effectively describe work experience on machines?
For each position, describe the type of machinery, tonnage or output, shift model, and at least one improved metric.
A sentence like 'operating production machines' says nothing. It becomes concrete like this: 'Operating 6 Engel injection moulding machines from 80 to 450 t, cycle time 11 seconds, 11 million parts per year, scrap below 0.8 percent'. Name the manufacturer and control system (Engel CC300, Arburg Selogica, KraussMaffei, Bobst, Krones, Sig Combibloc) as well as the peripheral equipment you're proficient with: dryers, material feed, handling robots, camera inspection, labellers.
Show where you go beyond mere operation. Setting up and tool changes, adjusting hold pressure, cooling time and tool temperature, fault diagnosis for sink marks, flash or streaks, SPC sampling, first-sample release, and feedback in SAP PP or the shop floor data system. Anyone who can document changeover times in minutes, downtime in hours per month, or OEE in percentage points immediately stands out.
Don't forget the shift model: 2-shift, 3-shift, four-shift operation with weekends or permanent night shift. Add leadership elements such as 'line supervisor for 4 employees' or 'trained 7 new machine operators', as many positions are advertised as relief or foreman roles, and companies are specifically looking for this combination of technical skill and instruction.
How long should the CV be and is a photo needed?
Two pages, a friendly portrait photo, and Swiss conventions such as location, permit and availability are the standard.
Keep it to a maximum of two pages. The first page contains the profile, at-a-glance facts, machinery and equipment knowledge, and the current position; the second page covers previous positions, education, certificates and languages. Summarise older roles in a single line. A photo is still customary in Switzerland and is expected for production positions: businesslike, current, work clothing is acceptable and even comes across as authentic in industry.
Also typically Swiss: place of residence with canton, citizenship or permit type, driving licence category B and vehicle ownership (important for a shift start at 05:00 without public transport connections), and an availability date that takes the notice period into account. Salary figures don't belong in the CV; if an expected figure is requested, state it in the cover letter, for example CHF 72'000 to CHF 85'000 including shift allowances.
Submit a PDF with a clear file name, such as 'CV_Marco_Buehlmann_MachineOperator.pdf', and attach work references as well as copies of your forklift and crane licences. Adapt the keywords to the job posting: if it says 'injection moulding' or 'filling line', that term must also appear in your CV so you get through the initial screening.

Marco Bühlmann
Machine Operator / Production Mechanic EFZ, specialising in injection moulding and packaging lines
Production Mechanic EFZ with 9 years of experience on injection moulding machines (Engel, Arburg) and automated packaging lines in 3-shift operation. I set up, run and optimise machinery with cycle times under 12 seconds while keeping scrap rates below 0.8 percent. Experienced in SPC checks, TPM maintenance, and GMP- and IFS-compliant documentation of production batches.
What sets me apart
Setting up, not just operating: Independent tool changes on injection moulding machines up to 450 t, including hot runner adjustment, temperature control and start-up approval - average changeover time 38 minutes instead of the standard 65 minutes.
Reading and using process data: Analysis of cycle times, hold pressure profiles and trend curves in the machine control system; faults are detected from key parameters before scrap occurs.
First-line maintenance under TPM: Autonomous maintenance to TPM standard: lubrication schedule, filter changes, visual inspection of hydraulics - resulting in 22 percent fewer unplanned stoppages across four lines.
Signed-off quality responsibility: Release of first samples per inspection plan using calipers, micrometer and height gauge; complete batch documentation for IFS and GMP audits.
Key achievements
Changeover time reduced by 41 percent. Introduction of a SMED changeover cart with pre-heated tools on 6 injection moulding machines: changeover time cut from 65 to 38 minutes, adding around 480 machine hours of capacity per year.
Scrap reduced from 2.4 to 0.7 percent. Systematic adjustment of hold pressure, tool temperature and cooling time on a 16-cavity multi-cavity tool - material savings of around CHF 74'000 per year.
OEE increase on the packaging line. As line supervisor, increased OEE from 68 to 82 percent, reduced minor stoppages per shift from 14 to 5, and trained 4 employees on the line.
