Which qualification belongs in a fashion advisor CV?
First name the formal retail qualification, then the fashion-specific additional qualifications.
The standard route is via the Federal VET Diploma (EFZ) as a Retail Specialist, Sales Advisory specialisation, in the textile/clothing industry. Always spell out the specialisation and the industry, because for employers there is a big difference between advisory and merchandising. Anyone who entered through the two-year basic training correctly lists the Federal VET Certificate (EBA) as Retail Assistant and adds a later follow-up qualification.
For managerial positions, the professional examination for Retail Specialist with Federal Diploma of Higher Education counts, and above that the Federal Diploma as Retail Manager. Both signal that you not only know key figures such as conversion, average basket, UPT, sell-out and stock turnover, but can actively manage them. Add the vocational trainer course if you mentor apprentices - in many stores this is a selection criterion.
In fashion specifically, you score points with certificates in style and colour consulting, visual merchandising, material science and textile care. If switching careers from a related field such as clothing design or EFZ Women's Tailoring, highlight your fit and pattern-cutting knowledge. When citing recognition of foreign diplomas, note whether equivalence has been applied for or already confirmed with the SBFI.
How do I present work experience with convincing sales figures?
Describe the format of the sales area for each position and support your performance with three to four key figures.
Give a context sentence for each position with sales area in square metres, team size, segment (fast fashion, mid-market, premium, luxury) and turnover volume. Only this makes your figures comparable: a personal annual turnover of CHF 780'000 means something different in a premium boutique than in a high-footfall flagship store. Use the Swiss notation with an apostrophe, i.e. CHF 85'000.
Use the key figures that are actually measured in fashion retail: personal share of turnover, average basket, units per transaction (UPT), conversion rate, revenue per hour, return and complaint rate, number of active regular customers and repurchase rate. Always state the starting value, the end value and the time period, for example average basket from CHF 168 to CHF 214 in 18 months.
Technical tasks alongside sales also belong in the bullet points: goods receiving and transfers, stocktaking discrepancy, number of window changes per month, number of alteration orders, click-and-collect processing, cash responsibility with daily turnover, and mentoring apprentices. For part-time or temporary positions, add the level of employment in percent so that gaps and workloads are immediately clear.
How long, with photo - what is customary in Switzerland?
Two pages, a professional photo and a clear statement on permit, workload and availability are standard in retail.
Keep the CV to a maximum of two pages, or one page if you have less than five years of experience. In fashion sales, a current, well-groomed portrait photo is customary and expected by most store managers, because appearance and presentation are part of the job profile. Make sure the background is neutral and the style matches the employer's target segment.
At the top, include place of residence, nationality or type of permit (e.g. C or B), phone number in the format 079 000 00 00, and a professional email address. State the desired workload, availability for evening, Saturday and Sunday sales, and the possible starting date. Give language levels according to CEFR and separate sales-level proficiency from basic knowledge.
Avoid phrases like team player and resilient, and replace them with proven results. Have reference letters, diploma copies and, if needed, a current extract from the criminal record for cash responsibility ready, but only provide them upon request. Mention references with a note that you are happy to provide them after the first interview.

Seraina Bühlmann
Fashion Advisor / Retail Specialist with Federal Diploma of Higher Education
Fashion advisor with 11 years of experience in the premium women's and men's segment, including 5 years as deputy store manager. I combine type, colour and fit consulting with consistent clienteling and am responsible for a personal annual turnover of CHF 780'000 with an average basket value of CHF 214. I also train apprentice retail sales advisors and am responsible for implementing the visual merchandising guidelines across 420 m² of sales floor.
What sets me apart
Type, colour and figure consulting with a system: Certified style and colour consulting (seasonal colour types, figure types, proportion balancing). Of 25 consultation appointments per month, 71 percent result in purchases with an average basket of CHF 480.
Clienteling instead of walk-in customers: Well-maintained customer profiles with sizes, brand and colour preferences, occasions and purchase history. 340 active regular customers, repurchase rate of 62 percent, 4 preview events per season generating around CHF 35'000 in revenue each.
Fit through to the alterations workshop: Confident measuring (inseam, waist, back length), assessment of shoulder fit and grain direction, and order entry for the alterations workshop - around 60 alteration orders per month with a complaint rate below 2 percent.
Visual merchandising and sell-out management: Implementation of brand guidelines, fortnightly window and table changes, managing slow sellers through cross-selling combinations and markdown proposals to buying.
Key achievements
Average basket increased by 27 percent. Through structured needs analysis and complete-look consulting, my average basket rose from CHF 168 to CHF 214 and units per transaction (UPT) from 1.8 to 2.4 within 18 months.
Conversion rate from 22 to 29 percent. After introducing a fixed greeting and fitting-room standard for 9 employees, store conversion increased by 7 percentage points, equating to around CHF 260'000 in additional annual revenue.
Return rate halved. Consistent fit and material consulting, including care instructions, reduced the return rate at the concept store from 9 to 4.5 percent and the stocktaking discrepancy to 0.6 percent of turnover.
