What qualification do I need as a Fashion Advisor in Switzerland?
The standard path is the EFZ as a Retail Specialist, Consulting specialization, in the textile or fashion sector - but many boutiques also hire career changers with proven sales figures.
The three-year basic training as a Retail Specialist EFZ with a focus on textile trade (fashion) is the most common qualification and is almost always listed as a preference in job postings from department stores and chain retailers. The two-year training as a Retail Assistant EBA is sufficient for pure sales positions, but is generally not enough for consulting roles in the premium segment. Write the qualification exactly as it appears on your certificate, including specialization and sector - HR staff in retail pay attention to this.
If you want to develop further, mention ongoing or completed further training in your CV: Retail Specialist with Federal PET Diploma, Retail Manager with Advanced Federal PET Diploma, or a certificate in visual merchandising. The vocational trainer course is also a strong signal, because many stores train apprentices and need qualified supervisors for this. Courses in color and style consulting as well as material science belong in the certificates section, not in the education section.
As a career changer without an EFZ - for example from gastronomy, cosmetics sales, or a fashion degree - compensate for the missing qualification with hard numbers: personal annual sales, items per receipt, closing rate, size of the regular customer database you manage. Add a note on whether you plan to pursue a subsequent qualification under Article 32 of the Vocational Training Ordinance (BBV); this shows commitment to employers who value federal qualifications.
How do I build a convincing work experience section as a Fashion Advisor?
For each position, first describe the store context (area, assortment, sales, team size) and then three to four results with figures.
Store managers read your CV with key figures in mind. So state specifically: personal annual or daily sales, target achievement in percent, average receipt value in CHF, items per receipt, closing rate, exchange and return rate, as well as inventory discrepancy. A phrase like 'CHF 780'000 personal annual sales against a target of CHF 650'000' says more than three lines about customer orientation.
Organize the tasks according to the fashion sales cycle: customer approach and needs analysis, fitting room and changing room support, measurements and alteration orders, closing and add-on sales, follow-up through the customer database. Add the back-office side, which many underestimate: goods receipt, labeling and security tagging, restocking from the warehouse, markdown phases and sale refits, inventory, and implementation of visual merchandising guidelines. Whoever covers both is interesting for a deputy position.
Keep the order reverse chronological and don't leave gaps of more than three months unexplained. Summarize seasonal assignments, temporary help during the Christmas season, or fixed-term sale assignments into one entry and state the number of assignments. For part-time work, state the percentage, for example '80 percent', because this is standard in retail and correctly puts the sales figures into context.
How long should the CV be and should it include a photo?
Two pages is the maximum, and in fashion retail a professional photo is still customary and is often even expected.
Keep the CV to two A4 pages; with less than five years of experience, one page is enough. Use a calm, easily readable layout with clear sections - excessive graphic flourishes quickly look unprofessional in sales, unless you are applying to a very creative boutique. The file name should be 'CV_FirstName_LastName.pdf', and the document should be sent as a PDF, not as a Word file.
In Switzerland, an application photo is legally optional, but in customer-facing fashion sales it is practically standard, because appearance and grooming are part of the job requirements. Choose a current, professionally taken portrait in neat clothing appropriate to the target company, against a neutral background. Avoid vacation photos or selfies - in the fashion sector, this costs more goodwill than it earns.
In the header section, state your place of residence, nationality or residence permit (B, C, or G for cross-border commuters), mobile number, and email. For retail, two additional pieces of information are very valuable: your availability for evening, Saturday, and Sunday sales shifts, and your desired workload percentage. Date of birth and marital status are optional; provide references only upon request and mention this with a brief note.
