What qualifications are expected of Product Engineers in Switzerland?
A BSc or MSc in mechanical engineering, microengineering, systems engineering or mechatronics from a university of applied sciences or ETH/EPFL is standard.
The classic path leads through an EFZ as a polymechanic or design engineer, followed by a degree in mechanical engineering or systems engineering at a university of applied sciences. This combination is highly sought after by Swiss industrial companies because it shows you know manufacturing processes from hands-on practice. Mention your EFZ even if your bachelor's degree dates back ten years - HR staff in the Swissmem sector read this as a mark of quality.
For medical technology positions, employers additionally expect knowledge of ISO 13485, ISO 14971 and the MDR; a CAS in medical technology or regulatory affairs (FHNW, ZHAW, BFH) makes your profile considerably more competitive here. In the automotive and supplier industry, IATF 16949, APQP and PPAP are the relevant keywords instead. Only list the standards in your CV that you can explain in an interview with reference to a concrete project.
If you hold a foreign qualification, note the recognition by swissuniversities or the SBFI directly after the degree title. Also state your residence status (citizenship, B or C permit), since development roles in Switzerland often involve export control or customer projects with verification requirements.
How do I present projects and work experience convincingly?
For each position, describe the product context, followed by three to four results with figures on cost, time, quality or unit volume.
A Product Engineer is measured by tangible product metrics: manufacturing cost per unit, number of parts in the bill of materials, scrap rate, Cpk values, field failure rate, time-to-market. Phrase your points as results rather than as a list of tasks: 'Reduced manufacturing costs of a device family by 19 percent, saving CHF 340'000 per year' says more than 'responsible for cost optimisation'.
Place each role in context: industry, company size, series volume, manufacturing depth, QMS applied, and your role in the stage-gate process. A developer of one-off machines works very differently from someone in series development producing 15'000 units per year - this is exactly the distinction the reader looks for within the first few seconds. Also state how many suppliers you qualified and how many series launches you supported.
Disclose your tool landscape precisely: CAD system and version, PLM (Windchill, Teamcenter), ERP (SAP, Abacus), simulation (Ansys, Nastran), statistics (Minitab). Many Swiss companies filter for one specific CAD system. A short project appendix with two to three anonymised case studies (starting situation, solution, metric) is well received for development positions, provided you do not disclose customer data.
How long should the CV be, and does it need a photo?
Two pages are standard; a professional portrait photo remains common in Switzerland and is generally expected.
Keep your CV to two pages: profile, competencies with tools, work experience in reverse chronological order, education, certificates, languages. From around twelve years of experience, three pages are acceptable if the project list justifies it. Summarise earlier positions in two lines instead of describing them in the same level of detail as your current role.
A professional photo, place of residence, nationality or permit, and year of birth are standard in Swiss application dossiers. A complete dossier should also include work references and copies of diplomas as PDFs - an interim reference from your current employer strengthens your application. Do not list references without consent; write 'references available on request' instead.
When it comes to salary expectations, realism helps: Product Engineers with a university of applied sciences degree and three to five years of experience earn roughly CHF 95'000 to CHF 115'000 depending on region and industry, while those with project leadership and medtech experience can realistically expect CHF 120'000 to CHF 140'000.
