Which qualification belongs on a CV as a Network Electrician?
State the Network Electrician EFZ including specialisation and all safety certifications, as employers check these points first.
Initial vocational training lasts four years and leads to the Federal VET Diploma as Network Electrician EFZ. Always state the specialisation: Power, Overhead Line Construction, Telecommunications or Overhead Contact Line Construction. Writing only "Network Electrician" loses informative value, because a distribution network operator focused on cables is looking for different skills than an overhead line specialist or a railway company with overhead contact line systems.
In the certificates section, list all proof required on site: instruction for switching operations and the five safety rules per NIV and ESTI directive, training for working at heights with PSAgA and pole rescue, first aid and BLS-AED, crane operator licence, as well as driving licence category B or BE, and sometimes C1. Add the year of the last recertification, since many certifications must be renewed periodically.
If you are aiming for further development, mention modules attended towards Network Specialist or Chief Fitter Network Electrician with a Federal Diploma of Higher Education, or training as a vocational trainer. For foreign qualifications, include a reference to recognition by the SBFI or a completed adaptation course in the CV, along with your permit status.
How do I describe my professional experience as a Network Electrician concretely?
Describe voltage level, network type, route length and installation quantities for each position instead of general task lists.
Start each position with a context line: is it a distribution network operator, a network construction company or a railway operator, which voltage levels do you handle, and how large is the supply area. Statements such as "Distribution network with 42'000 network connections, low and medium voltage up to 16 kV, 46 km of overhead line routes" say more than any list of standard tasks.
This is followed by three to four points with figures. Good metrics include cable metres laid, number of joints and terminations installed with voltage level, number of service connections created, transformer stations converted or refurbished, poles erected, number of meter and ripple control installations, on-call rotation with number of call-outs, and average restoration time. Also mention the team size you lead and the order volume handled in CHF.
Also show your safety and quality discipline: switching operations carried out, earthing and insulation measurements, VLF or partial discharge testing, worksite and trench safety, accident-free periods over a certain number of months. For overhead line work, cable pulling projects, span fields and insulator replacements under de-energised conditions or in proximity are of interest, while for telecommunications networks, the number of spliced fibre optic connections is relevant.
How long should the CV be and does it need a photo?
Two pages are sufficient, and a professional portrait photo remains customary in Switzerland and is well received.
Keep the CV to a maximum of two A4 pages; with over ten years of experience, summarise older positions in one line. Structure: contact details, brief profile, competencies, professional experience in reverse chronological order, education, certificates and safety certifications, languages. Since site managers and network leaders often have little time, specialisation, voltage levels and driving licences belong on the first page.
A passport photo in work or business attire with a neutral background is standard, but not mandatory. Add your place of residence and travel time to the depot, your nationality or permit (B, C, G), willingness for on-call duty and weekend work, as well as the earliest possible start date and notice period. This information often determines whether you get invited for network construction sites.
Tailor the CV to each job posting: for an energy supplier, highlight cable installation, switching authorisation and fault service; for an overhead line company, pole work and suitability for heights; for a railway company, overhead contact line systems. Current salaries for network electricians with EFZ and a few years of experience range, depending on the region, from around CHF 78'000 to CHF 95'000, higher as foreman or chief fitter; only state a salary expectation if explicitly requested.
