What qualification do you need to work as a Frontend Engineer in Switzerland?
An EFZ as an Application Development Computer Scientist or a BSc in Computer Science from a university of applied sciences are the two common paths - but demonstrable code is what really counts.
The classic Swiss path begins with the four-year apprenticeship as an Application Development Computer Scientist EFZ, often combined with a vocational baccalaureate. This is frequently followed by a BSc in Computer Science or Business Information Technology at a university of applied sciences such as FHNW, ZHAW, HSLU or BFH, sometimes completed part-time alongside work. An ETH or university degree in computer science is also common but not required for pure frontend roles.
Always state the qualification with its correct Swiss title and year, for example 'BSc FHNW Computer Science, Web Engineering major, 2016'. For foreign diplomas, a recognition statement from Swiss ENIC helps, or a note such as 'equivalent to BSc, verified by Swiss ENIC'. Career changers from bootcamps or with CAS qualifications (such as the CAS Frontend Engineering from HSLU) should place their portfolio and public repositories clearly ahead of their education.
Professional certificates only add value in frontend roles when they match the job profile: CPACC or WAS for accessibility, Google Mobile Web Specialist for performance, a cloud certificate for deployment responsibility. Avoid generic online course certificates without an exam - Swiss recruiters place far more weight on a link to GitHub, a Storybook, or a live demo.
How do you present professional experience as a Frontend Engineer convincingly?
For each position, describe the product, team and tech stack, then three to four results with figures on performance, quality or business impact.
Don't write 'developed web applications' - instead, state what you measurably changed: reduced LCP from 4.2s to 1.6s, cut the bundle by 41 percent, increased test coverage from 18 to 76 percent, migrated 47 legacy views. Frontend work is unusually easy to measure - use Core Web Vitals, Lighthouse scores, error rates from Sentry, conversion rates and the number of reused components.
Provide context so the figures can be interpreted correctly: team size, number of users, monorepo or microfrontends, collaboration with UX and backend. One sentence is enough: 'Health insurance customer portal, React/TypeScript monorepo, 14-person product team, 180'000 registered users.' The bullet points follow after that. This structure also helps if your CV first passes through an applicant tracking system.
Present the tech stack not as an endless list, but grouped and honestly by level: core stack (TypeScript, React, Next.js), solid knowledge (Vue, GraphQL), basic knowledge. Swiss teams verify this in the technical interview and pair-programming assessment. Also mention whether you have worked on multilingual products (DE/FR/IT), in a regulated environment (insurance, banking, public administration with eCH standards), or in agile setups with a design system - this makes a real difference in the Swiss market.
How long should the CV be, and does it need a photo?

Keep the CV to two pages: page one with the profile, at-a-glance facts, tech stack and current position, page two with earlier positions, education, certificates and languages. Summarize positions older than twelve to fifteen years in a single line. As a Frontend Engineer, links to GitHub, a portfolio or a published design system belong in the header - clickable and brief.
A professional portrait photo remains common in Swiss job applications and is expected by many agencies and large companies, though it is not legally required.
