What qualification do you need as a Department Manager?
The usual requirements are an EFZ in retail plus the eidg. Fachausweis as a Retail Specialist - but leadership experience on the sales floor counts just as much.
The classic path begins with a Retail Specialist EFZ, followed by the professional examination as a Retail Specialist with eidg. Fachausweis. Those aiming for a step up to store or business management later add the higher professional examination as a Retail Manager with eidg. Diplom. Commercial EFZ qualifications or a business school diploma are also accepted if you can demonstrate several years of sales floor and team responsibility.
Write your qualifications exactly as the Swiss education system names them: 'Retail Specialist with eidg. Fachausweis, 2019' is more informative than 'Further training in sales'. For foreign diplomas, add a note on recognition by the SBFI or a brief indication of the equivalent level, so the HR department doesn't have to guess.
Industry-specific certificates are mandatory in many departments and therefore belong on the CV: a vocational trainer course for training apprentices, HACCP and hygiene training under the Food and Commodities Ordinance (LGV), knowledge of youth protection regarding alcohol and tobacco, and the basics of the EKAS industry solution for occupational safety.
How do you present your professional experience as a Department Manager?
For each role, describe the department, the sales area, the team size and the revenue - and back up your impact with key figures.
A department without figures remains vague. So state: sales area in m², number of items, annual revenue in CHF, number of employees and apprentices, opening hours and shift model. Only then can a store manager assess whether your experience fits the advertised position - a fresh produce department with CHF 8.5 million in revenue is a different league from a minor department with CHF 600'000.
Phrase your achievements using the key figures you are actually measured on: gross profit margin, gross margin, markdown and prep loss rate, inventory variance, revenue per linear metre or m², personnel cost ratio, overtime hours, footfall and average basket value. State the starting value, the end value and the time period each time, for example 'fruit/vegetable markdowns from 4.6 to 2.9 percent in 12 months'.
Also document the operational tasks that take up time in daily department work: ordering and stock planning in the merchandise management system, implementing promotions and planograms, goods receipt and temperature checks, inventory preparation, till closing, staff appraisals and scheduling in line with the Employment Act and the CLA. Being specific here immediately comes across as more credible than clichés such as 'responsible for smooth operations'.
How long should the CV be, and does it need a photo?
Two pages, a friendly portrait photo and the omission of personal details are standard in Swiss retail.
Stick to a maximum of two pages, or three if necessary for more than ten years of experience. Positions from the last ten to twelve years are described in detail with key figures, while older roles are summarised in a single line. Place a short profile of three sentences at the top, covering your department, revenue responsibility and team size - many store managers review applications between two shifts and rarely read further.
A photo is still customary in Switzerland and particularly expected in sales, since customer contact is central to the role. Use a professional portrait with a neutral background and business attire. Leave out details on marital status, religion or photos of your children; on the other hand, year of birth, place of residence, nationality or permit type (for example, a C permit) and your contact details should be included.
Add two points that often make a difference in retail: your flexibility for evening, Saturday and Sunday sales shifts, including a category B driving licence, and the earliest possible start date, stating your notice period. Save the dossier as a single PDF with a descriptive file name such as 'CV_Marco_Brunner_Department_Manager.pdf', and attach reference letters and diploma copies in the same file behind it.
