What degree is expected of Software Engineers in Switzerland?
In Switzerland, several equivalent paths lead into the profession - from the IT specialist EFZ to the Higher Federal Diploma (HF) to a Master's degree from ETH or a university of applied sciences.
The classic Swiss path begins with the Federal VET Diploma as an IT specialist EFZ specializing in application development, often combined with the Vocational Baccalaureate. Building on this are the dipl. Techniker HF Informatik program, the Bachelor FH in Computer Science or Business Information Technology at ZHAW, FHNW, HSLU, BFH or OST, as well as the Bachelor's and Master's degrees at ETH Zurich or EPFL. Most positions accept all of these paths - what matters is that you state the degree correctly, for example 'BSc FHNW in Computer Science' rather than a vague description.
List the degree together with the institution and year, and for a Master's degree add the thesis topic if it's relevant to the position, for example 'Master's thesis: Consistency models in distributed databases.' For foreign diplomas, an assessment from Swiss ENIC in the CV or cover letter helps, since Swiss HR staff otherwise have difficulty placing the level. Career changers without an IT degree should instead lead with a portfolio, public repositories and supplementary training.
Certificates don't replace a degree but strengthen the profile when they match the stack: AWS or Azure for cloud roles, CKA and CKAD for platform engineering, ISTQB for quality-focused positions, PSM I or PSPO I for team responsibility. List at most four certificates with the year and leave out expired or purely trivial online courses.
How do I describe work experience and technologies effectively?
For each position, describe the professional context, your technical responsibility and three to four results with numbers, rather than a list of frameworks.
For each position, state the domain, the system size and the team size: 'Core banking system, 220 million transactions per year, Scrum team of 8.' Only this context makes your achievements comparable, since refactoring an application with 600,000 lines of code is different from doing so in a prototype. Swiss employers also pay close attention to industry experience: banking and insurance, MedTech with IEC 62304 and MDR, industry with an embedded component, and e-government with eCH standards each have their own requirements.
Quantify technical impact wherever you can support it: deployment frequency, lead time for changes, change failure rate, MTTR, P95 latency, test coverage, number of resolved CVE findings, or infrastructure costs saved in CHF. State your role in the outcome precisely, i.e. 'led the migration of 4 batch processes to Kafka' rather than 'was involved in modernization.' Anyone who made architecture decisions should name them along with the rationale in a short sentence.
Keep a compact skills section separate from your experience and group it by languages, platform, data storage and practices. Avoid percentage bars or star ratings for technologies - they come across as imprecise in Swiss dossiers. Adjust the order to match the job posting: if the position requires Kotlin and Kubernetes, they shouldn't be listed eleventh.
How long should the CV be, and is a photo required?
Two pages is the standard; a professional photo is still common in Switzerland, but not mandatory.
Two pages are sufficient even with ten years of experience; three pages are only justified for a very long career with many projects. Summarize older positions in one to two lines, and give the most space to the last two roles. Avoid long project lists in the CV and instead attach a separate project or reference list if you come from consulting or engineering services.
A professional headshot in the top right corner is still common in Switzerland and expected by many recruiters, though no one may legally require it. Also common are details on place of residence, nationality or permit (B, C, or cross-border commuter permit G), and availability with notice period. Date of birth and marital status have become optional; leaving them out carries no disadvantage.
A complete dossier includes CV, a short cover letter, work references and diplomas as a single PDF with a descriptive file name. Add a GitHub or GitLab profile and LinkedIn only if the content there is current and well organized. Salary expectations don't belong in the CV, but rather in the interview or application form - typical market ranges are roughly between CHF 95'000 and CHF 145'000, depending on region and seniority.
