What training do you need as a Site Manager in Switzerland?
The classic Swiss career path leads via a construction EFZ, site foreman with a federal Fachausweis, or directly to a Certified Technician HF in Construction Management or a Federal Diploma Master Builder.
Always state the exact Swiss title and institution in your CV: 'Certified Technician HF, Construction Management' is something different from a Bachelor's degree FHNW in Civil Engineering, and an HR manager at a construction company will spot the difference immediately. If you come from a trade background, include your Mason EFZ or Carpenter EFZ, as it demonstrates your practical experience. For foreign diplomas, note the recognition by the SBFI or mention that the application is in progress.
Add your specialist courses where they count in day-to-day practice: CRB courses on NPK costing and measurement, further training on SIA 118 and SIA 103, the SUVA course for safety officer (KOPAS), and BIM fundamentals with model checking. These certificates carry more weight than general leadership seminars, because they directly relate to tasks listed in a site supervisor's job description.
Also state your permit or citizenship status and your category B driving licence in the header. Site Managers drive daily between the construction site, client meetings and the works yard, and cross-border commuters should make their permit status transparent so that recruitment doesn't stall.
How do you present your site experience convincingly?
For each position, describe the project type, contract value, team size and construction period, and back up your performance with figures rather than task lists.
One sentence of context per position is enough: construction company or general contractor, segment (residential, commercial, renovation during operation, civil engineering), number of parallel sites and range of contract values in CHF. This is followed by three to four bullet points with figures, for example 'Shell construction CHF 15 million in 11 months, slab cycle 9 working days' or 'Variation order volume CHF 1.2 million, approval rate 87 percent'.
Show the three core dimensions by which you are measured: schedule, cost and safety. Concretely, this means milestone adherence against the construction programme, deviation in the budget-vs-actual comparison under eBKP-H, and figures on accidents or lost days per 1'000 working hours. Round this out with quality figures such as the number of defect items at acceptance and the time taken to resolve them.
If you were promoted from foreman to site supervisor, make this step visible by listing both roles with their own time period. If you have spent several years at the same company, list the three to five most relevant projects with contract value and role in a short project list, rather than describing every site individually.
How long should the CV be, and do you need a photo?
Two pages are standard, a third page as a project list is accepted in the construction industry, and a professional photo remains customary in Switzerland.
Keep the first two pages lean: header with contact details, place of residence and citizenship, a three-sentence profile, followed by work experience, education, courses and languages. Attach the project list with property, contract value, construction period and your role separately, so the main body stays readable while the construction management can still see your reference volume.
A professional portrait photo is generally expected in German-speaking Switzerland and may well look down-to-earth; a picture in work clothes on the construction site is unnecessary. Year of birth, marital status and religion are optional, whereas place of residence and commute are relevant, because construction sites are location-bound and an early start to the working day is part of daily life.
Adapt the language to the canton: in French-speaking Switzerland, or on bilingual sites in Valais and Fribourg, mention your French level according to the CEFR and your experience with French-language client meetings. Salary expectations do not belong in the CV but in the cover letter or the interview; typical ranges for site supervisors, depending on region and contract value, are roughly between CHF 95'000 and CHF 135'000 per year.
