Which qualification belongs on a strategic buyer's CV?
In Switzerland, the Buyer with Federal PET Diploma and the Certified Purchasing Manager HFP from procure.ch are the most recognized credentials, complemented by a business degree or a technical vocational background.
State the qualification exactly as it appears on the diploma, i.e. 'Buyer with Federal PET Diploma' or 'Certified Purchasing Manager HFP', and add the provider and year. HR managers in industry know these titles and immediately gauge your level. If you hold a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from a university of applied sciences or a CAS in Supply Chain Management, list it as equivalent and highlight the procurement focus.
For international employers, it is worth mentioning CIPS modules or a CPSM, as these titles serve as a reference in the Anglo-Saxon world. However, be honest about partial qualifications: write 'Modules 1-3 completed, final examination planned for 2026' rather than claiming a finished title. In the Swiss labour market, every statement is checked during the interview.
Without a formal purchasing qualification, your technical background counts. A Polymechanic EFZ with further training in purchasing is often more attractive for categories such as machining, sheet metal, or assemblies than a pure business graduate, because you can assess drawings, tolerances, and manufacturing processes. Make this advantage explicit in your profile.
How do I present my professional experience in strategic procurement convincingly?
Show volume, categories, supplier count, and savings achieved for each position - without figures, your CV remains interchangeable.
Start each position with a context line: industry, company size, procurement volume managed in CHF, and the categories handled. A buyer with CHF 5 million in indirect volume works completely differently from someone managing CHF 68 million in direct materials and international framework agreements. This classification determines whether your application even makes the shortlist.
Then state three to four achievements with hard figures: savings in CHF and percent, reduction of the supplier base, improvement in on-time delivery or ppm values, shortened lead times in the source-to-contract process, extension of payment terms. Note whether savings were verified by controlling - this distinguishes solid figures from wishful thinking.
Also organize your experience by sourcing levers: demand pooling, specification optimization with engineering, supplier switching, nearshoring, e-auctions. Anyone working in the public sector should mention experience with the Federal Act on Public Procurement (BöB) and the Intercantonal Agreement on Public Procurement (IVöB), as well as tenders via simap.ch, including thresholds and award criteria. This allows readers to immediately recognize which procurement world you master.
How long should the CV be and does it need a photo?
Two pages are standard; a professional portrait photo remains customary in Switzerland and is expected by most employers.
Keep the CV to a maximum of two pages, even with fifteen years of procurement experience. The last ten to twelve years get detailed achievement bullet points; older positions should be summarized in one to two lines. A reverse chronological structure with clear month-and-year dates is mandatory; address gaps proactively rather than concealing them.
Regarding the photo: use a current, friendly business portrait in the top right corner, not a holiday snapshot. In the header, add your place of residence, citizenship or permit status (for example, C permit), phone number, and a professional email address. Details on marital status, religion, or photo are legally optional, but omitting the photo is sometimes perceived as unusual in conservative industrial companies.
Also typical for Switzerland is the complete dossier: CV, brief cover letter, work references, and diploma copies combined into a single PDF, named according to the pattern 'Lastname_CV_Company.pdf'. State language levels according to the CEFR, since in German-speaking Switzerland, French skills are often decisive when dealing with suppliers from Romandie and France. A line on availability and notice period saves a follow-up question.

Marco Bühlmann
Strategic Buyer / Category Manager, Certified Purchasing Manager HFP
Strategic buyer with twelve years of experience in category management for electronics, mechanical components, and indirect requirements at Swiss industrial companies. Responsible for an annual procurement volume of CHF 68 million and has realized demonstrable savings of CHF 4.2 million over three years. Combines rigorous negotiation based on TCO logic with long-term supplier development, dual-sourcing strategies, and clean compliance regarding proof of origin and due diligence obligations.
What sets me apart
Category strategies instead of one-off negotiations: Develops material group strategies based on the Kraljic portfolio, including procurement market analysis, make-or-buy calculations, and a 36-month sourcing roadmap - for eight categories with a total volume of CHF 41 million.
TCO and cost-breakdown expertise: Breaks down supplier quotes into material, setup, processing, and logistics costs and conducts negotiations using cost models rather than percentage demands; achieved an 11% price reduction on turned parts without a volume commitment.
Protection against Swiss franc strength and raw material volatility: Negotiates price adjustment clauses based on LME and plastics indices as well as EUR contracts with treasury hedging; limited the 2022 material cost increase to 2.1% instead of the market-typical 7%.
Supply chain compliance: Manages supplier self-disclosures on VSoTr, REACH, and RoHS, verifies preferential certificates of origin and EUR.1 forms for customs processing, and maintains audit readiness under ISO 9001:2015 for 100% of A-suppliers.
Key achievements
Three-year savings programme. Realized CHF 4.2 million in rigorously verified savings on a procurement volume of CHF 68 million, of which CHF 1.6 million came from demand pooling across three plants; savings were reconciled monthly with controlling and anchored in the budget.
Resilience following single-source failure. Established dual sourcing for 34 critical components and resized safety stocks; supply failures dropped from 19 to 4 cases per year, and on-time delivery performance of A-suppliers rose from 87% to 96.5%.
Digitalization of the source-to-contract process. Introduced SAP Ariba Sourcing for 120 users, ran 62 electronic tenders in the first year, and reduced lead time from demand notification to framework agreement from 74 to 41 days.
