Which qualifications and registrations belong on an insurance advisor's CV?
The VBV training, any Federal Diploma of Higher Education (eidg. Fachausweis) and your active Cicero registration are central - these are the three things the HR manager looks for first.
State the industry-specific basic training first: the VBV Certificate for Insurance Intermediaries or the completed VBV Intermediary qualification. Those who have gone further list the Federal Diploma of Higher Education (Insurance Specialist, Social Insurance Specialist or Financial Planner) with year and examination location. Write the qualifications exactly as awarded by the SBFI, i.e. 'Federal Diploma of Higher Education' rather than 'diploma' - recruiters in the industry will spot the difference immediately.
Equally important is registration: if your Cicero education account is active, state this and add the education points for the current cycle. If you are registered as an independent intermediary in the FINMA intermediary register, mention this too, since broker employers can factor it in directly. Courses on FinSA/FinSO (FIDLEG/FIDLEV), ISA (VAG) revision, BVG or supplementary KVG insurance show that you have mastered the regulatory side of your profession.
If you are still missing a qualification, state the status transparently: 'Professional examination, Insurance Specialist, examination autumn 2026, property/personal modules completed'. This is standard practice in Switzerland and looks more professional than leaving a gap. A commercial diploma (KV), a banking apprenticeship or an SME background are not weaknesses here - they explain why you understand corporate clients and accounting figures.
How do I present work experience and sales figures convincingly?
For each position, describe portfolio, segment and key figures such as premium volume, closing rate, cancellation rate and retention rather than general task lists.
Start each position with a short context sentence: type of employer (general agency, direct insurer, broker, health insurer), the size of your portfolio and client segment. 'Portfolio of 1'150 clients and 210 SME mandates, premium volume CHF 4.3 million' says more than 'advising clients in the insurance sector'. Follow this with three to four points backed by figures: new business premium, number of mandates, closing rate, cancellation rate, retention, NPS or appointment conversion from leads.
You do not need to disclose confidential information to do this. Work with changes and ratios instead of internal names: 'reduced cancellation rate from 11% to 5.8%' or 'achieved premium savings of CHF 310'000 per year across 42 mandates'. For amounts, use the Swiss format with an apostrophe, i.e. CHF 85'000, and consistently calculate premium volume on an annual basis.
For career changers, transferable evidence counts: sales results from retail or telesales, client numbers from a bank branch, experience with advisory records or claims handling. Add the VBV course you are currently taking and a line about your readiness for field work with your own vehicle, territory responsibility and Cicero further training. This shows the general agency that you understand the role profile.
How long should the CV be and does it need a photo?
Two pages, a professional photo and the usual Swiss details on place of residence, permit, languages and availability are standard.
Keep the CV to two pages: profile, key figures at a glance, three to four positions in detail, older roles listed only with title, employer and year. A photo remains customary in Switzerland and is especially expected in insurance sales, since you are the face to the client - choose a friendly, businesslike photo in business attire.
State your place of residence and canton, your citizenship or permit (C, B, G), driving licence category B, and languages with CEFR levels. For advisory roles, the language claim is sensitive: only state C1 if you can conduct a consultation, including contract terms and coverage exclusions, in that language. Territory preferences and availability ('immediately or by arrangement, 1 month notice period') also belong in the header section.
Tailor the CV to each position: for a general agency, emphasise new business, lead handling and territory development; for a broker, emphasise tenders, underwriter contacts and corporate mandates; for a health insurer, emphasise KVG/VVG knowledge and autumn campaign periods. Name your systems specifically - Adcubum Syrius, Sobrado, Salesforce or your own Cicero account - and save the file as a PDF named 'CV_Lastname_Firstname.pdf'.

Marco Bühlmann
Insurance Advisor / Insurance Specialist with Federal Diploma of Higher Education (eidg. Fachausweis), Cicero-registered
Insurance advisor with nine years of experience advising private clients and SMEs on property, liability, health and personal insurance (VVG/KVG/UVG/BVG). I manage a portfolio of 1'150 clients with an annual premium volume of CHF 4.3 million and have reduced the cancellation rate in my territory from 11% to 5.8%. Advice is provided consistently in line with ISA (VAG) intermediary obligations and FinSA (FIDLEG) documentation standards, in German and French.
What sets me apart
Both worlds: field sales and brokerage: I know the sales logic of a general agency (targets, lead management) and the tendering practice of a broker via Sobrado - this lets me negotiate premiums and coverage extensions on equal footing with underwriters.
Comprehensive SME advice instead of single products: I bring together business and professional liability, property insurance, UVG/UVGZ, daily sickness benefits insurance (KTG) and BVG affiliation in a single risk check; on average 2.4 contracts per SME mandate versus 1.3 across the team.
Compliance as a sales argument: Complete advisory records in line with ISA (VAG) Art. 45 and FinSA (FIDLEG) suitability assessment; no material findings in three internal audits from 2021-2024 covering 120 reviewed files.
Claims support builds client loyalty: I actively support claims through to payout instead of handing them to back-office staff - retention in my portfolio stands at 94.2% versus the regional average of 88%.
Key achievements
Increased premium volume by CHF 1.1 million. Built up the SME segment in the Olten/Zofingen territory: 78 new corporate mandates in 24 months, new business premium of CHF 1.1 million, of which 42% property and liability coverage.
Reduced cancellation rate from 11% to 5.8%. Introduced a structured follow-up consultation after 90 days for all new policies; conducted 640 meetings, reducing chargeback risk by around CHF 95'000 per year.
Trained 12 junior advisors. As a workplace trainer, developed an onboarding programme covering VVG fundamentals, needs analysis and Cicero obligations; 10 of 12 candidates passed the VBV professional examination on their first attempt.
