What qualification do you need as a Polymechanic in Switzerland?
The standard is the Federal Certificate of Proficiency Polymechanic EFZ after a four-year apprenticeship - write it out including your specialisation.
Always state the full title "Polymechanic EFZ" plus your specialisation or focus area in your CV, for example manufacturing technology, design technology or automation. HR professionals in the MEM industry immediately read from this whether you are stronger at the machine, at the screen or in assembly. If you completed an apprenticeship as a Production Mechanic EFZ and later built on it to become a Polymechanic, mention both steps with the years.
For managerial roles, further training counts: the Federal Professional Certificate as Production Specialist, Process Specialist or Maintenance Specialist, a Diploma as Technician HF in Mechanical Engineering or Systems Engineering, plus the Vocational Baccalaureate as a gateway towards a University of Applied Sciences. Place these qualifications higher up in the education section and write the title correctly, as protected titles such as "Dipl. Techniker HF" are verified. List ongoing training with the expected completion date.
If you hold a foreign qualification, add the recognition status with the SBFI as well as your residence permit (for example permit B or C, or cross-border commuter permit G). If formal recognition is lacking, demonstrate your level through the machine parks, tolerance specifications and materials you have worked with. This makes your skills tangible even without Swiss papers.
How do you correctly describe work experience and machine park?
Structure each position as brief context plus three to four measurable results, and specifically name the control, axes, materials and tolerances.
Start each position with two lines of context: company size, industry (medical technology, watches, aerospace, tool making), batch sizes, shift model and quality standard such as ISO 9001, ISO 13485, IATF 16949 or EN 9100. Then follow with your results in figures: setup time from 95 to 38 minutes, cycle time minus 32 percent, scrap from 2.8 to 0.6 percent, on-time delivery 96 percent. A sentence like "operation of CNC machines" says nothing and will cost you the interview.
The machinery and systems section is your filter for recruiters and search systems: controls (Heidenhain TNC, Siemens Sinumerik, Fanuc), number of axes and simultaneous machining, CAM software (hyperMILL, Mastercam, Siemens NX, Tebis), clamping systems, bar loaders as well as measuring equipment and software such as Calypso. Add your drawing skills: geometric dimensioning and tolerancing according to ISO 1101, general tolerances ISO 2768-1, fits ISO 286, surface specifications in Ra.
Also show your responsibility beyond the machine: first sample inspection reports, SPC control charts, tool management, maintenance, 5S and SMED projects, introduction of new parts and mentoring of EFZ apprentices. Those who train apprentices or run shift handovers have a clear advantage for positions as production specialist or team leader. Keep employment gaps visible and briefly explained, for example further training, military service (RS) or temporary assignments.
How long, with photo - what is customary in Switzerland?
Two pages, a professional portrait photo and a complete dossier with work references are the Swiss standard.
Keep the CV to a maximum of two pages; with more than 15 years of experience, condense older positions into a single line. A photo is still customary in Switzerland and expected at industrial companies - simple, current, without a selfie look. Information on year of birth, marital status and nationality is optional; place of residence, work permit and availability, on the other hand, belong in the header, because commuting distance and shift availability matter for planning.
Attach your EFZ, further training certificates and all work references to the dossier as one cleanly named PDF file, for example "Faessler_Marco_CV_Polymechanic.pdf". Mention your availability, notice period and willingness for two- or three-shift work as well as on-call duty. A realistic salary figure in Swiss notation, for example CHF 88'000 to CHF 95'000 gross per year, prevents unnecessary rounds; use the MEM industry collective agreement (GAV) and the region as a guide.
Adapt the CV to each job posting: if a long-turning automatic lathe with bar loader is sought, this experience must appear in the first lines, not on page two. Use the terms from the job posting (5-axis, running-in, first sample report, ISO 13485, setup) and avoid clichés such as "team player and resilient". Finally, check figures, dates and technical terms - in a trade that works to hundredths of a millimetre, care in the document is read as a work sample.
