What qualification is expected of Franchise Partners in Switzerland?
There is no formal mandatory qualification, but business management qualifications plus industry-specific licences are in demand.
In Switzerland, the profession of Franchise Partner is not protected and there is no franchise law - the franchise agreement is an innominate contract. Franchisors therefore assess you through your business plan, your creditworthiness and your management experience. State your commercial foundation concretely in your CV: EFZ commercial employee, federal certificate of proficiency (e.g. retail specialist, management specialist), HF diploma or a Bachelor FH in Business Administration.
Depending on the sector, additional licences apply that you should definitely list: the hospitality licensing diploma of your canton, the food hygiene certificate with HACCP self-monitoring, or in health or cosmetics franchising the corresponding professional licence. For training apprentices, the vocational trainer course under the BBG is a prerequisite - a strong signal for system partners who invest in the next generation.
Highlight further training with a direct franchise focus: CAS Franchise and Sales Management, seminars of the Swiss Franchise Association (SFV) or courses on multi-unit management. Always add the year and institution to this line so that its currency is recognisable.
How do you present professional experience as a Franchise Partner convincingly?
Show network revenue, EBITDA margin, number of sites, employees and time-to-break-even for each position.
Describe each position with a brief context sentence: number of sites, cantons, employees, revenue volume, and whether you worked on the franchisee or franchisor side. This distinction is central, because development experience (candidate selection, onboarding, manual maintenance) demonstrates different competencies than operational multi-unit management with P&L responsibility.
Then quantify with the key figures that count in franchising: network revenue and growth in percent, EBITDA or contribution margin, cost of goods or cost of sales ratio, staff cost ratio, average receipt value, revenue per square metre, sales per labour hour, staff turnover, rent burden as a percentage of revenue, and royalty and marketing fee rates. Write amounts according to Swiss convention, i.e. CHF 85'000 or CHF 6.4 million.
Also demonstrate your system loyalty and financing capability. Statements such as 'break-even after 7 instead of 14 months', 'QSC audit score of 94%' or 'structured bank financing of CHF 950'000 with a guarantee' are stronger arguments for franchisors than general statements about customer focus.
How long should the CV be and should it include a photo?
Two pages, a professional portrait photo and an appendix with business plan references are customary in Switzerland.
Two pages are the standard: page one with profile, a brief overview of the key figures and the two most recent positions, page two with further experience, education, certificates, languages and systems. A professional portrait photo in the top right is still common in Switzerland and, for a partnership-based role such as franchisee, tends to be an advantage.
State your place of residence, citizenship or residence permit (C, B, cross-border commuter G) as well as your language levels according to the CEFR. For systems with sites in Romandy or Ticino, French and Italian language skills are a genuine selection criterion. Also state your mobility and the region in which you would like to take over a territory.
At the end, add a line about equity readiness and financing structure if you are applying as a franchisee - for example 'own funds for investment available from CHF 150'000'. Provide references from landlords, fiduciaries or your previous franchisor with the note 'available upon request', and send the CV as a PDF with a descriptive file name.

Marc Hügli
Franchise Partner (Multi-Unit) · Business Economist FH, CAS Franchise & Sales Management
Franchise Partner with 11 years of experience developing and operating franchise sites in German-speaking Switzerland and Ticino, including 6 years as a multi-unit franchisee with four operations. I am responsible for P&L, site acquisition, compliance with the franchise manual, and recruitment and training of branch managers, including apprentice supervision under the BBG. My strength lies in combining operational management with robust business planning vis-à-vis franchisors, banks and landlords.
What sets me apart
Multi-unit scaling with a robust business plan: I prepare site business plans with break-even calculations, investment plans (CAPEX CHF 480'000 per unit) and sensitivity analysis - the basis for two approved bank financings with guarantee.
Compliance with the franchise manual and system standards: Internal mystery shopping and QSC audits (Quality, Service, Cleanliness) with an average score of 94% across four sites, no warning from the franchisor in 6 years.
Site acquisition and lease negotiation: Analysis of pedestrian frequency, catchment area analyses (10-min isochrones) and negotiation of turnover-based rents - average rent burden reduced from 11.2% to 8.9% of revenue.
Staff and training under Swiss law: Application of the L-GAV hospitality / GAV retail collective agreement, working time recording under ArGV 1, training of 7 EFZ apprentices with a 100% completion rate.
Key achievements
Fourth site reached break-even in record time. Opening in Winterthur reached break-even after 7 months instead of the 14 months calculated by the system; year 1 annual revenue of CHF 1.68 million against a target of CHF 1.35 million.
Contribution margin increased through cost-of-goods control. Food/cost of goods reduced from 32.4% to 28.1% across all sites (weekly inventory cycle, shrinkage tracking), effect of CHF 246'000 per year.
Staff turnover halved and recruitment costs reduced. Staff turnover reduced from 68% to 31% through shift planning in the Gastrofix/Staff tool and an internal branch manager career path; recruitment expenses down CHF 74'000 annually.
