What qualifications are expected for a deputy store manager position?

Swiss retail companies generally require an EFZ in retail or a commercial basic education, complemented by the eidg. Fachausweis as a Retail Specialist.

The classic route is the three-year Detailhandelsfachfrau/-mann EFZ basic education. State the specialisation (Sales Consulting or Merchandise Management), the vocational school and the year of graduation. Anyone coming from a different sector, for example with a Koch EFZ, Fachfrau Betreuung EFZ or a commercial (KV) qualification, should explain in the profile what leadership and merchandise responsibility they have already taken on - this is well recognised in the retail sector.

For the next career step, the eidg. Fachausweis as a Retail Specialist is the key qualification; those aiming for store management should also state the Detailhandelsmanager/in HFP diploma or ongoing training with an expected completion year. List these titles exactly as they are named in the Swiss education system, including the designation 'mit eidg. Fachausweis'. For foreign diplomas, add a note on recognition by the SBFI, if applicable.

Practical certificates make your dossier concrete: an in-company trainer course for training apprentices, HACCP and food hygiene training, courses on the Labour Act and shift scheduling, first aid and BLS-AED, as well as internal leadership programmes. For stores selling alcohol or tobacco, mention training on youth protection and test purchases - this is a common inspection point for the cantonal authorities.

How do I present my professional experience as a deputy manager convincingly?

For each position, describe the store size, sales and team size, and back up your impact with key figures such as shrinkage, gross profit or staff turnover.

Under each job title, add two lines of context: sales area in square metres, annual sales in CHF, number of employees and apprentices, service counters available, and opening hours including Sunday sales or a station location. HR managers in retail can immediately see from this whether your experience matches the advertised store. A team of 8 employees in a neighbourhood shop is a different matter from 30 employees in a shopping centre with CHF 20 million in sales.

Phrase your points as results, not a list of tasks. Instead of 'responsible for inventory', write 'reduced inventory shrinkage from 0.91% to 0.42% of sales, equivalent to around CHF 61'000 per year'. Good key figures for this role are gross profit margin, write-offs and food waste, sales per staff hour, availability of top-selling items, mystery shopping scores, staff turnover and apprentice pass rates.

Make your deputy role visible: how many weeks per year did you run the store alone, what authority did you have in that time (ordering, scheduling, complaints, daily closing, cash management), and what results were achieved during that period? Also mention projects such as renovations, assortment changes, the introduction of self-checkout, or the switch to a new merchandise management system, including budget and timeframe.

How long should the CV be, and is a photo required?

Two pages is the standard; a professional photo is still customary in Switzerland and clearly recommended in customer-facing retail roles.

Stick to two pages: the first page with contact details, a brief profile, key figures at a glance and your current role, the second page with further positions, education, certificates and languages. If you have more than fifteen years of experience, summarise older positions in one line per role. A cover letter of no more than one page is still part of a complete dossier in retail.

A professional portrait photo in business or work attire is expected by most Swiss retailers, as customer contact and appearance are part of the job. In the header of your CV, add your place of residence, nationality or permit (for example Permit C or Permit B with validity), year of birth, and mobility details such as a category B driving licence - this is relevant if you switch between stores within a region.

State your availability and notice period, your willingness to work evenings, Saturdays and Sundays, and your desired level of employment. Salary expectations only belong in the cover letter if requested; realistic ranges for deputy store managers, depending on region and store size, are CHF 68'000 to CHF 85'000 per year. Save the dossier as a single PDF with a clear file name, for example 'Lebenslauf_Brunner_Sandra.pdf'.
