What qualification do I need as an installer in Switzerland?
The foundation is the Federal Certificate of Proficiency (EFZ) as a plumber, heating or ventilation systems installer, supplemented with suissetec further training.
Always state the exact title of your EFZ in your CV: Plumber EFZ, Heating Installer EFZ, Ventilation Systems Builder EFZ, or Building Services Planner EFZ. These titles are legally protected and are used by HR professionals as a filter. If you completed the three-year basic training as a Building Services Practitioner EBA and later obtained the EFZ, list both with the respective years.
Further training marks the difference between fitter and management position. The Plumbing Foreman or Heating Foreman with Federal Professional Certificate, completed at the suissetec Bildungszentrum Lostorf, qualifies you for site management and quantity surveying. Above that are the Master Plumber and the Plumbing Planner with Federal Diploma. Always state the title, institution and year of completion so the level is clear.
Add short but exam-relevant courses: SVGW drinking water hygiene W3/E3, VKF fire protection training for compartmentalisation, PE welding course, vocational trainer course and SUVA training. If you hold a foreign qualification, state whether recognition by the SBFI is in place or has been applied for - this answers the first question many Swiss employers would otherwise ask.
How do I build a convincing work experience section as an installer?
Describe, for each position, the type of projects, your responsibility and measurable results instead of a list of self-evident duties.
Start each position with a context sentence: new-build or refurbishment, project type (multi-family house, hospital, industrial), contract volume and team size. A site manager will immediately recognise whether you are used to 40-unit developments or service work in single-family homes. Phrases such as 'rough plumbing installation in 60 single-family homes' or 'riser refurbishment in 12 properties with 18 apartments each' are more informative than 'various construction sites'.
Then quantify three to four points. Figures that count in building services: number of bathrooms, metres of piping, schedule adherence, defect points at acceptance, saved time-and-material hours in CHF, number of fitters and apprentices supervised, on-call assignments and first-visit resolution rate. Avoid clichés such as 'reliable and team-oriented' - every application claims that.
Make your technical range visible by naming the systems and standards you have actually worked with: Optipress, Mapress, Mepla, Geberit Duofix, Silent-db20, SVGW W3, SN EN 806-4, SN EN 1717, SIA 181 and SIA 190. Anyone proficient in heat pump boilers, rainwater harvesting or hydraulic balancing is in demand for refurbishment projects and should make this clear in the CV.
How long should the CV be and is a photo required?
Two pages, a professional photo, and the Swiss-specific details on work permit, driving licence and availability are standard.
Keep the CV to a maximum of two A4 pages. Describe the last ten to twelve years in detail and summarise older positions in a single line. Use month and year for all employment periods, as gaps quickly stand out in the construction industry. Explain interruptions such as military service, further training in Lostorf or time abroad briefly and factually.
A photo is still customary in Switzerland and expected by most building services companies. Choose a friendly, current portrait in work or business attire, not a holiday photo. On the other hand, omit details on marital status, religion or number of children, as these have no bearing on suitability as an installer.
Add the practical points in the header that are decisive for scheduling: place of residence and working radius, driving licence category B or BE, willingness for on-call and emergency service, work permit or citizenship, and earliest starting date. Also state whether you can confidently use German and dialect on site - this is a genuine selection criterion when dealing with customers in occupied properties.
