Which qualification belongs on a site manager's CV?
State your protected title exactly, because 'Bauleiter' is not a uniformly regulated title in Switzerland, and the qualification determines how you are classified.
Write your qualification exactly as it appears on the diploma: Certified Technician HF Site Management, Federally Certified Master Builder, Certified Site Manager Building Construction (Professional Examination), or Civil Engineer FH or ETH. Add the school and year, for example Campus Sursee 2018 or Höhere Fachschule Bau Zurich 2014. A Mason EFZ as basic vocational training is not a drawback but an argument in your favour, because it shows you know the execution work firsthand.
Clearly distinguish between building construction, civil engineering, and building services. If you come from civil engineering and are applying for a residential construction role, explain in your profile which experience is transferable, such as contract management, measurement, or site logistics. For foreign diplomas, mention recognition by the SBFI or note that equivalence recognition has been applied for.
List specialist continuing education separately under Certificates when it is directly rewarded: SIA 118 and construction contract law, cost planning under eBKP-H, Minergie certified partner, construction safety officer, BIM coordination, or fire protection specialist VKF. For planning offices and general contractors, these courses are concrete selling points.
How do I structure my work experience as a site manager convincingly?
Describe each position through project volume, SIA phases, number of works contracts, and schedule and cost deviation rather than task lists.
Under each position, add two lines of context: type of building (residential, commercial, school, occupied-building renovation), volume in CHF, your role (on-site management, overall management, contractor site supervision), and the phases you handled. A sentence like 'On-site management, phases 41-53, CHF 18 million construction costs, 32 works contracts' says more than ten bullet points.
Then quantify three to four achievements. Useful metrics include deviation from the cost estimate in percent, rate of contract extras, schedule adherence in weeks, number of people and contractors managed, volumes, number of apartments, or defect items resolved by handover. Also mention savings from contract negotiations in francs, for example CHF 640,000 compared to the cost estimate.
Add a short project list if you have many reference projects: project, location, volume, year, your role, without naming clients you are not permitted to disclose. Also mention the systems you work with daily, such as Messerli, Sorba, Abacus, MS Project, BIM 360, or construction administration under eBKP-H, because employers want to estimate the onboarding time.
How long should the CV be, and is a photo needed?
Two pages are standard, a professional photo is still customary in Switzerland, and details on permit, driving licence, and region belong on the first page.
Keep the CV to two pages; with more than 15 years of experience, three pages with a separate project list are acceptable. Summarise older positions in a single line. Use a clear structure with profile, at a glance, work experience, education, certificates, languages, and save the file as a PDF with your name and occupation in the file name.
A professional portrait photo in the top right increases response rates in Switzerland. Also state your place of residence, nationality or permit type (such as settlement permit C), year of birth, and category B driving licence, since as a site manager you drive between sites and office daily. Mention the region in which you can take on sites, for example the Central Plateau and Northwestern Switzerland.
Tailor your profile to the job posting: a planning office looking for a site manager for client representation values cost control and SIA phases, while a general contractor emphasises schedule pressure, contract awarding, and managing subcontractors. State references as 'available on request' and clear the release beforehand. Assess your language skills realistically according to the CEFR, since Portuguese, Italian, or Albanian is often spoken on site, and honest information is more credible than exaggeration.

Marco Zbinden
Certified Site Manager HF Building Construction, Federally Certified Master Builder
Building construction site manager with 12 years of experience in on-site supervision and overall management of residential and commercial buildings ranging from CHF 3 million to CHF 42 million. I independently manage SIA phases 41 to 53, award 30 to 45 works contracts per project under SIA 118, and keep cost forecasts within under 2 percent deviation from the cost estimate. My focus is on schedule control through cycle planning, defect management, and a site culture where SUVA rules apply in practice, not just on paper.
What sets me apart
Cost certainty instead of a flood of extras: I check cost estimates for completeness under NPK before awarding contracts, which reduced the rate of contract extras in three projects from 9 to 3.2 percent of the contract sum.
Cycle planning in interior fit-out: I schedule interior fit-out in apartment cycles of 5 working days per floor, which saved 7 weeks of construction time across 96 apartments.
Client communication as equal partners: Monthly cost forecasts with a traffic-light system and photo documentation, resulting in no escalated client complaints in 6 years.
Measurable workplace safety: Weekly safety walkthroughs using a SUVA checklist, resulting in zero accidents with lost days over four years across more than 210,000 working hours.
Key achievements
Residential development with 96 apartments completed 7 weeks ahead of schedule. On-site management of a new building with CHF 42 million in construction costs, handed over 7 weeks ahead of schedule and final accounting 1.1 percent under the cost estimate.
Reduced contract extras by CHF 640,000. Through systematic review of 38 contractor bids and more precise tender texts under NPK, the volume of contract extras fell by CHF 640,000 compared to the previous project.
Defect reduction from 1,240 to 60 items in 5 weeks. Digitized handover with tablet-based defect management, with 95 percent of notices resolved before the deadline under SIA 118 Art. 172.
