Which qualifications and licences do I need to mention as an MPA in my CV?
Name the EFZ in Medical Practice Assistant with the year of completion, followed by every additional qualification that authorises you to perform delegated tasks.
The standard qualification is the Federal Certificate of Proficiency (EFZ) as a Medical Practice Assistant after a three-year apprenticeship. If you trained abroad, state the original title and add the recognition status with the SBFI, for example 'equivalence recognised 2022' or 'recognition procedure ongoing'. Practices check this early, because your deployment in the laboratory and for X-rays depends on it.
Radiation protection is decisive: without a recognised expertise course under the Radiation Protection Ordinance, you may not perform X-rays. State explicitly whether you hold the expertise for non-dose-intensive or dose-intensive applications and when you last attended continuing education – the continuing education requirement is a genuine selection criterion. The same applies to the BLS-AED-SRC course with the refresher date.
Position your further training clearly: the professional examination to become a Medical Practice Coordinator exists in a practice management direction and a clinical direction, and each leads to different tasks. State the direction, the year and what you take on as a result, for example your own chronic care consultations or responsibility for staff, hygiene concept and billing.
How do I describe my professional experience as an MPA convincingly?
Describe the type of practice for each position and then list three to four points with quantities, rates or Swiss franc amounts.
First give the context: specialty, number of physicians, consultations per year, and whether a practice laboratory, X-ray facility and emergency admission are available. An MPA from a group practice with an emergency department works differently from an MPA in a single dermatology practice, and your future employer wants to recognise this difference at a glance.
Then quantify the delegated tasks: number of venipunctures, laboratory analyses, X-rays, ECGs, spirometries, vaccinations or wound checks per year. Add quality evidence such as passed proficiency tests, results of a practice inspection or a reduced repeat rate for X-rays. Such figures demonstrate routine without you having to claim to be resilient.
Do not forget the administrative part, because that is where practices have a lot of money at stake: service recording under TARMED and the transition to TARDOC, the analysis list, tiers payant and tiers garant, electronic invoicing, dunning and receivables turnover. Phrase it as a result, for example rejection rate reduced from 6 to under 2 percent or billing cycle shortened from 12 to 4 days.
How long should the CV be, and is a photo needed?
Two pages is the standard; a friendly portrait photo is still widely used in Switzerland and practically expected in medical practices.
Keep it to two pages: profile, at a glance, professional experience with the last three to four positions, education, certificates, languages. Mention your workload in percent and your availability, because practices almost always staff part-time schedules of 40 to 80 percent and want to know whether you can take on Saturday duty or evening consultations.
A professional portrait photo in the top right corner remains part of the standard dossier in Switzerland, especially in practices with direct patient contact. Avoid selfies and holiday photos. Details on citizenship or residence permit (B, C, G) are common and save follow-up questions, especially for cross-border positions in Basel, Geneva or Ticino.
Note two further Swiss particularities: language skills should be stated with the level according to the CEFR, and in bilingual regions French or Italian often determines whether you are invited to interview. The dossier should also include work references from all positions as well as copies of your diploma, radiation protection expertise certificate and BLS-AED – attach them as PDFs and refer to them in the CV.

Sandra Bühlmann
Medical Practice Assistant EFZ, Medical Practice Coordinator MPK clinical direction (Federal Diploma of Higher Education)
Medical Practice Assistant EFZ with 9 years of experience in general practitioner and group practices with 4'800 to 6'200 consultations per year. I run the practice laboratory with QUALAB-compliant internal and external quality control, perform X-rays independently in the non-dose-intensive range, and care for chronically ill patients in diabetes and blood pressure consultations. As MPK clinical direction, I measurably relieve practice owners in triage, recall programmes and TARMED/TARDOC billing.
What sets me apart
Practice laboratory with certification, not just routine: I am responsible for internal quality control and the QUALAB proficiency testing for 11 analyses (Hb, CRP, INR, HbA1c, urine status, ESR, among others) and document batches and equipment maintenance in an audit-proof manner.
X-ray work with valid expertise certificate under the Radiation Protection Ordinance (StSV): Conventional X-ray of chest, skeleton and paranasal sinuses with a recognised radiation protection expertise course, continuing education requirement fulfilled, dose documentation and personal dosimetry under control.
Billing that goes through: TARMED positions including delegated services, the FOPH analysis list, tiers payant and tiers garant as well as electronic invoicing via MediData – rejection rate below 2 percent.
Chronic care as MPK: Dedicated consultation slots for diabetes, hypertension and anticoagulation according to practice guidelines, including recall lists, adherence discussions and structured feedback to the physician.
Key achievements
Vaccination campaign doubled. Increased flu and booster vaccinations according to the Swiss vaccination schedule from 180 to 410 in 7 weeks, organised in 14 walk-in slots without additional staff.
Receivables and rejections reduced. Reduced health insurer rejections from 6.1 to 1.7 percent and cut outstanding items over 90 days from CHF 62'000 to CHF 18'000.
Sterile goods processing validated. Redesigned processing of medical devices according to the hygiene guideline: autoclave batch documentation, Bowie-Dick and Helix tests, 100 percent pass rate in the 2023 practice inspection.
