What qualification do you need as a waiter/waitress in Switzerland?
The standard route is the EFZ as a Restaurant Service Specialist (3 years) or the EBA as a Restaurant Assistant (2 years) - however, many establishments also hire career changers with practical experience.
Always state the qualification using its official title: "Restaurant Service Specialist EFZ" or "Restaurant Assistant EBA", together with the vocational school and year of completion. If you trained abroad, state the original title plus the recognition status with the SBFI or the classification by Hotel & Gastro formation. Anyone working without a formal qualification should instead list completed courses - Progresso, HACCP hygiene training or the first aid course.
Further training carries real weight in service roles when it is clearly categorised: trainer course (40 lessons), GastroSuisse wine seminars, sommelier training, barista certificates, or higher vocational qualifications such as Head of Restaurant Area with a Federal Diploma of Higher Education. For management ambitions, the Gastro entrepreneur courses G1 to G3 and the innkeeper's licence (Wirtepatent) are relevant depending on the canton - state explicitly which canton it applies to.
Place your education lower down in the CV if you have more than three years of experience; for recent graduates it belongs directly below the profile. Also state your permit situation (Swiss citizenship, C, B or cross-border G permit) and your availability - seasonal businesses in Engelberg, Zermatt or Grindelwald often decide based on start date.
How do you describe service work experience with figures?
Make your workplace measurable: seats, covers per shift, average bill, team size and number of banquets say more than "guest care".
For each position, first describe the context in one line: type of establishment (à la carte, quick-service, banquet, hotel restaurant, bar), number of indoor and terrace seats, service style (plated service, buffet, guéridon) and opening hours. Then follow with three to four bullet points with figures: "180 covers per shift", "independently ran a 40-seat station", "increased wine revenue per cover by 18 percent", "cash discrepancies under 0.1 percent".
Show the range of your tasks using the correct terminology: mise en place, table setting, taking orders on a handheld, coordination between kitchen and service (order entry, plating, course timing), wine service and decanting, daily closing, goods receiving, beverage inventory and HACCP temperature checks. Name the POS system used specifically - experience with Lightspeed, Gastrofix, Hypersoft or a reservation tool like aleno saves the employer training time.
Seasonal positions are normal in hospitality and not a drawback - list them with month and year and add "winter season" or "summer season" so no gaps are suspected. Demonstrate your resilience through working time models (split shifts, staggered shifts, 5-day week per L-GAV) and give a realistic salary expectation, for example CHF 55'000 to CHF 62'000 gross per year including the 13th monthly salary for a Chef de Service position.
How long should the CV be and does it need a photo?
Two pages is the maximum, and a photo is effectively standard in hospitality and expected by most employers.
Keep the CV to one or two pages, in reverse chronological order, with month and year for each position. Put what matters for service roles at the top: a three-sentence profile, qualification, languages with proficiency level, availability and place of residence. Language skills should be prominently placed - in hospitality and tourism, whether you can advise guests in French, English or Italian is often decisive.
A friendly, up-to-date portrait photo in business attire or neat service uniform noticeably increases response rates in Switzerland; holiday photos, sunglasses or group pictures look unprofessional. Leave out details on religion or marital status, but do include your year of birth, nationality or permit status, and your home address, since travel time for early and late shifts matters.
Add two references with their role and phone number ("references available on request" is fairly unusual in hospitality) and attach reference letters, a copy of your EFZ, and hygiene and first aid certificates as a PDF. Save the file as "CV_Lastname_Firstname.pdf" and tailor the profile to each application: a banquet operation wants to see banquet figures, a wine bar wants your sensory training, quick-service wants your figures on turnaround time and shift leadership.
