Which qualifications belong in a hospitality CV?
State the protected Swiss titles precisely, since hospitality HR managers clearly distinguish between EFZ, Fachausweis and HF diploma.
Write out your basic qualification in full: Hotel Specialist EFZ, Commercial Employee EFZ in the hotel-catering-tourism sector, Restaurant Specialist EFZ or Chef EFZ. Add the vocational school and year of completion. If you completed a two-year basic programme (EBA) and later upgraded, list both steps - this shows development rather than a gap.
Give higher qualifications prominent weight: the Federal Diploma Hôtelière-Restauratrice HF or Hôtelier-Restaurateur HF (hotel management schools in Lucerne, Thun, Passugg, Lausanne), the Federal Diploma of Higher Education Chef/fe de Réception, Head of Department Hospitality and Catering, or a Bachelor's degree from a hotel management university. For leadership positions involving the service of alcohol, the cantonal innkeeper's licence (Wirtefachausweis) is important - name the canton, since recognition is regulated at cantonal level.
Courses make a difference when they are industry-specific: HACCP self-monitoring, revenue management, Opera or protel training, BLS-AED, fire safety officer, or trainer for apprentices (Berufsbildner course). Skip general seminars unrelated to hotel operations, and always state the CEFR level for language diplomas, since guest contact in three languages is standard in the industry.
How do I structure work experience with figures?
Describe the type of establishment for each position and back up your impact with hotel KPIs rather than task lists.
Add a brief context sentence after each position: star category, number of rooms, type of establishment (city, resort, seminar or seasonal hotel), occupancy rate and team size. For Swiss recruiters, a 5-star resort with 300 beds and half-board is a different job from a 3-star city hotel with 40 rooms - without this framework, your achievements cannot be properly assessed.
This should be followed by three to four quantified points using the KPIs that matter in hospitality: occupancy, ADR, RevPAR, GOPPAR, direct booking rate, OTA share, TrustYou or Google score, cost of goods as a percentage, staff costs as a percentage of revenue, number of check-ins per shift, banquets managed and their guest numbers. Example: 'Reduced banquet cost of goods from 31% to 27%, adding around CHF 48'000 in additional profit per year.'
Seasonal positions are normal in Switzerland and not a sign of instability - label them as a season (e.g. winter season 12/2019 - 04/2020) and show returning seasons as a sign of appreciation. List experience abroad, language stays and internships in cruise or resort hospitality chronologically. Make leadership responsibility measurable: number of employees directly managed, number of apprentices, budget responsibility in CHF.
How long should the CV be, and is a photo needed?
Two pages, a professional photo and a complete dossier are standard in the Swiss hospitality industry.
Keep to a maximum of two pages, or one page if you have less than five years of experience. A photo is particularly common in hospitality, since a welcoming presence and appearance are part of the role: friendly, well-groomed, neutral background, business attire - no holiday snapshots or selfies. Add your place of residence, contact details, nationality or permit (e.g. C permit), and your availability for shift, weekend and seasonal work.
A complete dossier includes a cover letter, CV, work references, diplomas and, if applicable, the innkeeper's licence (Wirtefachausweis). List references with their role and employer, ideally your director or department head, and obtain their consent beforehand - the industry is small and references are actually called. Mention your earliest possible start date, since seasonal businesses often plan at short notice.
Tailor your CV to each employer: when applying to a resort in Valais, emphasise half-board, ski guest services and wellness; for a business hotel in Zurich, focus on MICE, corporate rates and check-in efficiency. Use the systems mentioned in the job posting (Opera, protel, Mews, HS/3, Fidelio, SiteMinder), and only state your salary expectations if requested - within a realistic range, e.g. CHF 62'000 to CHF 85'000 depending on role and region.
