What qualification is required for social work in Switzerland?
For specialist positions in social services, professional guardianship and child protection, employers generally require a Bachelor's degree in Social Work from a university of applied sciences; in some cantons, a degree in social pedagogy or social work from a higher vocational college (HF) is also accepted.
State your qualification exactly as it appears on your diploma: "Bachelor of Science FUAS in Social Work" with your specialisation (social work, social pedagogy or socio-cultural animation) and institution, for example FHNW, ZHAW, HSLU, BFH or HES-SO. If you qualified via the HF route, write "Diploma Social Pedagogue HF" and, if applicable, add a note on any ongoing bridging programme (Passerelle). For a foreign diploma, recognition by the SBFI or the level confirmation from SAVOIRSOCIAL must be included in the CV, otherwise your application is often screened out without further enquiry.
For mandate positions, proof of qualification in child and adult protection law is almost mandatory. List a CAS or MAS (ZHAW, BFH, HSLU) as well as KOKES courses on accountability reporting, inventories and asset management separately under further training. In the social assistance field, knowledge of SKOS guidelines, the cantonal Social Assistance Act and rulings practice counts for more than a general counselling qualification.
Add specialist method courses with their scope and provider, so the effort involved is visible: "Systemic counselling, 24 days, SGS-accredited" carries far more weight than "Counselling training". Also mention if you are a member of AvenirSocial or certified as a practical training supervisor according to your university of applied sciences' standards - both are often a plus in job postings.
How do I describe professional experience in social work convincingly?
For each position, show case numbers, mandate types, legal bases and the scope of funds managed, rather than describing tasks in general terms.
Begin each position with a context sentence: the responsible body (municipality, association, foundation, canton), the population of the catchment area, team size and target group. This should be followed by three to four bullet points with figures: number of case files managed, proportion of statutory mandates, monthly disbursement volume in CHF, number of reports to the KESB per year, or number of assessments conducted. Phrases such as "78 guardianships/deputyships under Art. 394/398 ZGB" are immediately meaningful to supervisors.
Make impact visible, not just workload. Good evidence includes case closure rates in social assistance, shortened assessment duration, the proportion of outpatient measures used instead of placements, project funding secured, or successful outcomes in appeal proceedings. If you are not permitted to use internal statistics, work with approximate figures ("around 110 case files") - this is acceptable as long as you can stand behind it in an interview.
Pay attention to the Swiss system landscape: name specialist applications such as Klib, Tutoris or KiSS, accounting systems such as Abacus, and cooperation with the KESB, RAV, IV office, Pro Infirmis, Spitex or school social work. Briefly explain any moves between cantons, since social assistance legislation varies by canton and employers want to know whether you can quickly adapt to a new practice.
How long should the CV be, and is a photo needed?
Two pages is standard; a professional portrait photo is still customary in Switzerland and is generally expected in social work.
Keep it to a maximum of two pages; with more than ten years of experience, three pages are acceptable if every line adds substance. Summarise older internships and holiday jobs in a single line. Place your profile at the beginning, followed by professional experience - education comes first only if you are a career starter.
The header should include your place of residence, contact details and your residence status (Swiss citizenship, C settlement permit or B residence permit), since providers and municipalities often handle employment relationships under public sector personnel law. State language levels according to the CEFR and add the practical context, e.g. "French B2, case discussions and correspondence". A category B driving licence is relevant for home visits and outreach work and should be explicitly included.
A businesslike photo in business-casual attire, friendly and up to date, supports your application; holiday snapshots or selfies come across as unprofessional. For your application file: a PDF with a clear file name, work references and diplomas as separate attachments, references provided only on request and always with consent - discretion is a key criterion assessed in social work. A criminal record extract and a special private extract under Art. 371a StGB are required for work with minors; mention that both are available on request.

Nadine Brunschwiler
Social Worker BSc FUAS, Specialist in Statutory Mandates (KESB) and Social Assistance (SKOS)
FUAS-qualified social worker with 9 years of practice in municipal social services, professional guardianship and open child and youth work. I currently manage 78 guardianships/deputyships under Art. 394/398 ZGB and administer economic social assistance under SKOS guidelines, processing around CHF 210'000 in support payments monthly. My strength lies in resource-oriented case management for multiply burdened clients and in legally sound reporting to the KESB and the social welfare authority.
What sets me apart
Statutory mandates, not just voluntary counselling: I manage guardianships/deputyships under Art. 393-398 ZGB, including asset management, inventories and biennial accountability reports - in 2023, all 39 reports submitted were approved by KESB Winterthur without rejection.
SKOS reliability in contested cases: In 14 objections against reductions under § 24 SHG ZH, I substantiated the rulings so soundly that 12 cases were upheld on appeal before the District Council.
Child protection with clear risk assessment: Application of the Bern Assessment Instrument and Zurich's child endangerment reporting practice: 23 assessments per year, 17 of which were stabilised through outpatient measures instead of out-of-home placement.
Interinstitutional cooperation (IIZ): Fixed point of contact for the RAV, IV office and Suva in the IIZ process; 31 joint case conferences in 2023, average case duration shortened by 4 months.
Key achievements
Increased case closure rate in economic social assistance. 48 of 112 case files closed within 18 months through integration programmes and part-time employment - saving around CHF 640'000 in support payments.
Digitalised the case management process. Introduced standardised case file templates in Klib for 14 staff members; time required per initial assessment reduced from 4.5 to 2.8 hours.
Built and funded a youth project. Established outreach youth work in two neighbourhoods, secured CHF 85'000 in third-party funding from foundations and lottery funds, reaching 240 young people in the first year.
