What qualifications are expected of Application Managers in Switzerland?
The usual requirements are an IT Federal VET Diploma (EFZ) with further training or an FH Bachelor's degree in Business Information Technology, in both cases complemented by an ITIL certification.
The classic Swiss path leads through the EFZ as an IT specialist specialising in application development or platform development, followed by the Federal Diploma of Higher Education as ICT Applications Engineer or the Federal Certificate as Business Information Technology Specialist. Equally common is the FH Bachelor's degree in Business Information Technology, for example at FHNW, ZHAW or HSLU. State the qualification with the correct Swiss designation, including institution and year - HR managers check closely whether it is an Advanced Federal Diploma of Higher Education, a Federal Certificate, or an FH degree.
For certificates, job postings almost always expect ITIL 4 Foundation, and for senior roles ITIL 4 Managing Professional or specialist modules such as Create, Deliver and Support. IREB CPRE for requirements management, IPMA Level D to B, or HERMES 5.1 Advanced are further assets if you support application projects in public administration. Cloud certificates (AZ-104, AWS SysOps) are in demand when applications move from the data centre to hosted environments.
List certificates with the year and provider, and separate them from your education. If a certification has expired or you have an exam scheduled, state this transparently, for example 'ITIL 4 Specialist DSV, exam scheduled Q2'. Without a Swiss qualification, add a recognition by the SBFI or swissuniversities as well as a note on your residence status.
How do I present professional experience as an Application Manager convincingly?
Describe the scope of applications you were responsible for at each position and support your impact with SLA, change and cost metrics.
Start each position with a context line: number of applications managed, number of users, criticality, budget, and whether you have functional leadership of staff. The difference between an Application Manager for two niche applications and one for a core system with 850 users is crucial for correct classification. State whether you were Service Owner, Application Owner or Product Owner, as these roles are structured differently across Swiss organisations.
This is followed by three to four bullet points with figures. Use the metrics that are actually measured in application management: availability against SLA, mean time to restore, number of priority-1 incidents, change failure rate, number of releases per year, ticket volume at second and third level, and savings on licenses and maintenance contracts. Phrase results before activities: 'Increased SLA availability from 99.2 to 99.8 percent' is stronger than 'responsible for application operations'.
Also highlight interface work, as it forms the core of the role: coordination with key users, management of external providers, participation in the Change Advisory Board, coordination of UAT phases, and collaboration with Information Security on access concepts and data protection under the revised Data Protection Act (revDSG). Mention the industry and regulatory context, for example FINMA-relevant applications, GxP-validated systems in pharma, or applications connected to Swissdec payroll standards.
How long should the CV be and is a photo required?
Two pages are standard; a professional photo is still customary in Switzerland and is recommended.
Keep the CV to two pages; with more than twelve years of experience, three pages are acceptable. The last ten years should be covered in detail, while earlier positions can be summarised in one line. Include a compact overview of the application landscape and tools so that recruiters and business departments can classify your profile within two minutes - an overly long technology list without connection to your roles, on the other hand, looks arbitrary.
A professional business-style portrait photo in the top right corner is still common in Switzerland. In the header, add your place of residence with canton, nationality or permit (B, C, G), year of birth, and phone number in the format 079 000 00 00. If you are a cross-border commuter or planning to relocate, mention your willingness to commute or your availability. Details on marital status or religion are not necessary.
Language levels should be included in the CV according to the CEFR scale, as many application teams work bilingually and user documentation is created in German and French. State your notice period or possible start date, and - if requested in the job posting - a salary expectation; for Application Managers, ranges typically lie between CHF 105'000 and CHF 140'000, depending on region and responsibility. Save the file as a PDF with a clear file name and adapt the profile lines to each job posting.
