What education and qualifications belong on an interior consultant's CV?
The classic entry point is the EFZ as a Retail Specialist, Living sector (furniture and interior fitting) - further training such as the Federal Professional Diploma as a Retail Specialist or courses from interieursuisse make the difference.
Always state your basic qualification in full and with sector: "Retail Specialist EFZ, Consulting, Living sector" tells an HR manager in furniture retail much more than just "salesperson". If you come from a related profession - Interior Decorator EFZ, Carpenter EFZ or upholstery - list this qualification just as precisely and add a line on how you made the move into interior consulting. Those coming from abroad should state whether recognition by the SBFI has been obtained or applied for.
Further training shows that you see the profession as a career: the Federal Professional Diploma as a Retail Specialist or Sales Specialist, an HF module in interior architecture or design, specialized courses in colour and lighting design, textile science, bedding and kitchen planning. Name the provider and year so the information remains verifiable. The vocational trainer course is a real plus in furniture stores with apprentices and definitely belongs on the certificate list.
Add technical evidence that counts in day-to-day consulting: training on planning software such as pCon.planner, Palette CAD or Winner Design, knowledge of the Swiss kitchen standard with 55 cm cabinet depth, VKF fire regulations for curtains in publicly accessible spaces, as well as the Price Indication Ordinance and the Consumer Credit Act for installment offers. Such details demonstrate depth of expertise that cannot be learned in two weeks.
How do I build a convincing work history as an interior consultant?
Describe the type of business and floor space for each position, then three to four achievements with figures on revenue, closing rate, average order value and complaints.
Start each position with a line of context: showroom floor space in square metres, product focus (upholstery, beds, kitchens, home textiles, contract business) and price segment. Consultative selling with average orders of CHF 6'800 and a planning component is a different job from self-service sales, and this classification helps the reader assess your experience correctly. Also mention whether you supervised apprentices or led a department.
Quantify consistently: personal annual revenue in CHF, closing or conversion rate, number of customer projects handled, share of repeat purchases, add-on sales rate for accessories and care products, complaint and return rate, on-time delivery for installations. Process improvements can also be measured: shorter quote turnaround time, reduced inventory discrepancies, fewer rework hours per quarter. Avoid clichés like "customer-oriented" - they mean nothing to anyone in Swiss furniture retail.
Show the full range of the role: on-site measurements, 3D visualization, quoting, supplier scheduling, coordination with carpentry, plumbing and electrical trades, and acceptance with defect reports. If you have handled contract business with property managers, hotels or hospitality clients, state the volume and number of units. This lets a new employer see that you can carry a project through to the final invoice, not just perform well in the sales conversation.
How long should the CV be, does it need a photo - and what is typically Swiss?
Two pages is standard, a professional photo is customary in retail, and details on permit status, driving licence and weekend availability clearly belong in the header.
Keep the CV to a maximum of two pages; with over ten years of experience, use the second page for further training, software and references. Earlier positions may be summarized in a short combined line after about 15 years. Also have your set of reference letters ready: in Switzerland, interim and final work references (Arbeitszeugnisse) are genuinely read, and in furniture retail you will often be asked for verifiable revenue figures.
In sales roles with direct customer contact, a current, friendly portrait photo in business attire is still customary and expected. Omit details on religion or marital status, but do state year of birth, place of residence, nationality or residence permit (e.g. B or C), category B driving licence - relevant for customer visits and measurement appointments - and your language levels according to the CEFR. For Romandy or Ticino, French or Italian respectively is often a genuine selection criterion.
Swiss particularities round out the picture: state your availability including Saturday sales shifts and extended opening hours, any notice period, and your salary expectations only if requested - and then realistically, for example CHF 78'000 to CHF 85'000 plus revenue share. Tailor the CV to the specific business: a kitchen studio expects evidence of planning skills, a textile house expects tailoring and material knowledge, a large furniture store expects figures on footfall and closing rate.

Marc Zurflüh
Interior Consultant / Furnishing Advisor, Retail Specialist with Federal Professional Diploma
Interior consultant with twelve years of experience in consultation-intensive furniture sales, from space planning through upholstery and bedding advice to kitchen planning according to the Swiss kitchen standard (55 cm cabinet depth). I guide customers from the initial floor plan survey through 3D visualization in pCon.planner to installation acceptance, achieving a closing rate of 34 percent with an average order value of CHF 6'800. Well-versed in the Price Indication Ordinance, the Consumer Credit Act, and textile consulting according to Martindale abrasion cycles and VKF fire ratings.
What sets me apart
Planning and sales combined: I take floor plan measurements myself on-site (including connections, window sills, blind boxes) and deliver a 3D visualization with furnishing options and a binding quote within 48 hours.
Technically robust material advice: I argue with hard facts rather than taste: Martindale cycles and light fastness for upholstery fabrics, usage classes according to EN 685 for flooring, fire rating for curtains in public spaces.
Legally compliant in retail: Price labeling according to the PBV, installment contracts according to the Consumer Credit Act, and withdrawal periods according to OR 40a ff. are documented with me - not a single complaint from the audit in three years.
Complaints as a repurchase opportunity: Structured defect documentation with photo report and supplier feedback within 24 hours: complaint rate reduced from 6.0 to 2.1 percent, 41 percent of complaint customers purchased again.
Key achievements
Revenue increase in the upholstered furniture segment. Introduced a new consultation ritual with seating trials, firmness and seat depth analysis: upholstery revenue increased from CHF 780'000 to CHF 1.05 million in 18 months, return rate below 1.5 percent.
Kitchen projects without delays. Handled 45 kitchen designs per year in Winner Design, coordinating installation with carpenters, plumbers and electricians: 93 percent of appointments on time, rework reduced by 28 hours per quarter.
Showroom redesigned. Supported the conversion of 620 m² of showroom space into eight living worlds, revamped labeling and price display: 19 percent more customer contacts per sales day, dwell time up 11 minutes.
