The role of a Kinyarwanda Interpreter at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) involves facilitating communication in humanitarian contexts. The ICRC is dedicated to providing protection and assistance to those affected by conflict and armed violence, promoting international humanitarian law, and working closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The main day-to-day responsibilities include oral interpretation between Kinyarwanda and French during confidential interviews, institutional dissemination, and dialogues with authorities. This role also involves written translation of Kinyarwanda documents into French, analyzing and reporting on detention conditions, and supporting other protection activities as needed. A minimum of two years of professional experience is required, with previous interpreter or translator experience being an advantage. A university degree in interpretation or translation is also beneficial. Proficiency in English and other ICRC operational languages such as Spanish, Russian, Arabic, or Portuguese is a strong asset. Nice-to-have skills include being strongly motivated by humanitarian work, the ability to work under pressure in potentially dangerous environments, and being open-minded and adaptable. The role is based in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with various sites and a hardship level that varies. Candidates must be prepared for unaccompanied postings for the first two missions, each lasting a minimum of 12 months, and must possess a driving license for manual transmission vehicles.
