The University of Bern invites applications for an Endowed Professorship in “Neuromorphic Systems” within the Institute of Physiology, offered as a tenure‑track assistant professorship. The position sits at the Faculty of Medicine and is supported by the Manfred‑Stärk Foundation for Brain Research, linking the university’s research units such as the Center for Experimental Neurology, the Neuroengineering Technologies Group, the ARTORG Center, and clinical partners at the Inselspital. The appointed professor will build an autonomous research agenda focused on neuromorphic systems, aiming to obtain external grants and to nurture interdisciplinary links across the faculty and with external institutions. Daily work includes developing theoretical models of brain information processing—covering neuronal dynamics, synaptic plasticity, machine learning, and the creation of fast, low‑power neuromorphic hardware—while also designing teaching modules in theoretical neuroscience that blend theory, biology, and brain‑inspired devices. Close cooperation with experimental and clinical neuroscience teams is expected, facilitating translational projects that bridge basic and applied research. Candidates must be fluent in English and German (or willing to learn), possess a documented record of teaching, and demonstrate the capacity to attract funding for cross‑disciplinary neuroscience work. Required expertise spans physics, neuroscience, applied mathematics or related fields, preferably integrating engineering and neuroscience, together with experience using computational tools for neuroscience and digital medicine. Proven leadership, strong communication, and the ability to steer diverse interdisciplinary groups are essential, as is a commitment to diversity, early‑career mentorship, and inclusive academic practice. The university promotes a respectful, healthy work culture and actively encourages women to apply. Flexible working arrangements, parental support, and the possibility of job‑sharing are available, reflecting UniBE’s emphasis on work‑life balance and the advancement of women in leadership roles.
