CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, operates the world’s most powerful particle‑accelerator complex to explore the fundamental constituents of matter. As a Theoretical Physicist in the CERN Theoretical Physics Department, you will join a limited‑duration talent pool that feeds future hiring needs for cutting‑edge research on elementary particles and their interactions. Your daily work will involve producing original theoretical contributions to particle‑physics research, collaborating with experimental colleagues when appropriate, and taking part in departmental activities, CERN committees and study groups. You will also help keep CERN’s links with the broader scientific community strong and engage in on‑site training programmes and the organisation of scientific events. The position requires a PhD or equivalent experience in theoretical physics or a closely related discipline, together with a record of post‑doctoral research that has resulted in peer‑reviewed publications. Candidates must demonstrate solid expertise in computational and mathematical physics, particle‑physics phenomenology and a deep understanding of theoretical physics. Strong problem‑solving, results‑orientation, relationship‑building and strategic‑vision skills are expected, as is fluency in spoken and written English or French with a willingness to learn the other language. The role is fully onsite at CERN, with a 40‑hour work week and a five‑year contract that can be extended up to eight years and may lead to a permanent appointment. Benefits include a tax‑free salary that rises with experience, 30 days of paid leave plus a two‑week annual shutdown, comprehensive health coverage, pension membership, family allowances, and a relocation package where applicable. The international, inclusive environment offers ample opportunity to grow within a leading scientific institution.
