The Mechanical CAD Designer role is situated in CERN's Superconducting Magnet Technology section. CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, builds and operates the world's most complex scientific instruments to explore the fundamental particles and forces of nature. In this team you will translate innovative magnet concepts into detailed three‑dimensional CAD models and production‑ready drawings that support future particle‑accelerator projects. Your daily work will involve creating 3D mechanical models and 2D manufacturing and assembly drawings for short‑magnet demonstrators, prototypes and the tooling required to build them. You will continuously refine these models by incorporating feedback from construction and assembly, and you will take part in technical discussions on tolerances, machining strategies and assembly methods. Supporting component procurement, you will keep the CAD data aligned with as‑built configurations, and you will provide customized 3D models for CNC machining and for electromagnetic or mechanical simulations. The position requires a higher technical diploma or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline. You must be proficient with CATIA or a comparable modern 3D CAD package and be able to produce detailed 2D drawings. Experience with a Product Lifecycle Management system such as PLM, Enovia or SmarTeam is essential, as is solid knowledge of mechanical assemblies and ISO‑GPS dimensioning and tolerancing. Fluency in spoken and written English or French is required, together with a commitment to learn the other language. A valid driving licence and the ability to be on stand‑by duty when the organization needs it are also mandatory, and you must be able to work a full 40‑hour week on‑site. A plus would be familiarity with the construction techniques and technologies specific to superconducting magnets, which would help you integrate more quickly into the specialised environment. The contract is a five‑year limited‑duration appointment, with the possibility of extension up to eight years and eventual eligibility for an indefinite position. CERN offers a tax‑free competitive salary, 30 days of paid leave plus a two‑week annual closure, comprehensive health coverage, pension membership, family allowances and a relocation package when applicable. The laboratory's inclusive, multicultural atmosphere encourages teamwork, accountability, flexibility and knowledge sharing. What the role asks for: - Higher technical diploma in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent - Proficiency in CATIA or similar 3D CAD software - Experience with PLM database (e.g., Enovia, SmarTeam) - Knowledge of mechanical assemblies and ISO‑GPS GD&T - Spoken and written English or French, commit to learn other - Valid driving licence - Availability for stand‑by duty as required - 40 hours per week workload - Nice‑to‑have: knowledge of superconducting magnet construction technologies
