Swiss Re, a global leader in reinsurance and risk‑transfer solutions, is looking for an Engineering Underwriter to join its Zurich hub. The position sits within the company's Engineering underwriting unit, which designs and manages reinsurance programmes for a variety of engineering risks, with a primary focus on the French market while also supporting other EMEA territories. The day‑to‑day work involves evaluating and pricing engineering treaty and facultative deals, performing technical and actuarial reviews, and negotiating terms with brokers and cedants. After underwriting, the role includes conducting on‑site risk surveys, setting portfolio reserves, servicing accounts, and assisting with claims. Business development is a key element: the incumbent will deepen relationships with insurers and brokers, promote Swiss Re's solutions for decennial cover, construction, infrastructure, parametric products and renewable‑energy projects, and help expand the firm's market share in France. Additional duties cover client advisory services, training sessions, product innovation collaborations, participation in industry events, and contribution to the global engineering knowledge network. Candidates must hold a university qualification in a scientific or commercial discipline; degrees in engineering, actuarial science or computer science are especially valued. Relevant experience in the (re)insurance sector is required, ideally in treaty underwriting, with at least three years of practice or demonstrable potential for early‑career professionals. Fluency in both English and French, in written and spoken form, is essential for client interaction and market activities. Preferred attributes include prior exposure to client markets or other insurance lines, strong analytical capabilities and comfort with standard IT applications. Familiarity with specific engineering lines such as decennial liability, construction, infrastructure, parametric covers or renewable‑energy insurance is advantageous. A genuine interest in complex technical subjects, willingness to travel on a moderate basis, additional language abilities, proven composure under pressure, and experience in cross‑functional or knowledge‑sharing projects are considered beneficial. What the role asks for: - University degree in scientific or commercial discipline - Experience in (re)insurance industry, preferably treaty underwriting - 3+ years underwriting experience or strong potential - Proficiency in English (written and spoken) - Proficiency in French (written and spoken) - Nice-to-have: experience in client markets and other business lines - Nice-to-have: strong analytical skills, proficient with common IT tools - Nice-to-have: familiarity with decennial, construction, infrastructure, parametric, renewable energy insurance - Nice-to-have: high interest in complex technical topics - Nice-to-have: willingness to travel moderately for client engagements - Nice-to-have: additional language skills beyond English and French - Nice-to-have: ability to work under pressure in ambiguous situations - Nice-to-have: experience in knowledge‑sharing or cross‑functional projects
