The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) seeks an Amharic, Oromo & Tigrinya Interpreter to support its global humanitarian mission of protecting and assisting people affected by conflict. The role bridges communication gaps between ICRC staff, detainees, authorities and other partners, ensuring that language does not hinder the delivery of aid. Daily duties involve oral interpretation between Amharic, Oromo or Tigrinya and English during confidential interviews, family‑link activities, visits to detainees' families and discussions with officials. The interpreter also translates written material such as newspaper articles and correspondence into English, and contributes analytical reports on detention conditions, security issues and other matters linked to the ICRC's mandate. Additional protection‑related tasks may be assigned as needed. The position requires fluency in English at C1 level and an equally high command of at least one of the three target languages (Amharic, Oromo or Tigrinya) also at C1. Candidates must have a minimum of two years' professional experience, be able to operate under pressure in potentially hazardous settings, and demonstrate a strong commitment to humanitarian work. A manual‑transmission driving licence, good health verified by a medical exam, and willingness to accept unaccompanied postings of at least twelve months (or a total of twenty‑four months) are mandatory. The ICRC's neutrality policy also means applicants cannot be nationals of the country where they will be deployed. The posting is mobile, with a 100 % rate and a maximum‑term contract lasting twelve months, extendable. Assignments are based in Ethiopia and may involve varying hardship levels; Geneva is also listed as a location. The role offers a multicultural environment, a two‑week orientation, ongoing in‑house training, attractive social benefits and inclusion in the ICRC talent pool for future missions. What the role asks for: - English proficiency C1 (required) - Amharic, Oromo or Tigrinya proficiency C1 (required) - Minimum two years professional experience (required) - Ability to work under pressure in dangerous settings (required) - Strong motivation for humanitarian work (required) - Manual‑transmission driving licence (required) - Good health with medical clearance (required) - Willingness for unaccompanied 12‑month missions (required)
