The Biotechnology and Bioengineering group at ETH Zurich, led by Prof. Dr. Martin Fussenegger, is seeking a PhD candidate for innovative projects in synthetic biology-inspired therapies. The group focuses on developing advanced cell-based therapies and synthetic biology techniques, aiming to engineer human cells with novel biosensors, gene switches, and genetic circuits for therapeutic applications. The main responsibilities of the PhD position involve combining molecular engineering, cell programming, and chemical-biological interfacing. This includes engineering human cells using synthetic gene circuits and biosensing platforms, developing real-time monitoring systems for cellular states, and creating genetic architectures for precise therapeutic protein regulation. The role also involves translating research into programmable cellular implant prototypes, requiring close collaboration with molecular biologists, bioengineers, and clinical researchers. Candidates must have strong skills in molecular and cell biology techniques, including the cultivation and engineering of primary human cells and mammalian cell lines. Experience with in vivo techniques and completion of an accredited laboratory animal science course (FELASA / LTK or equivalent) is an asset. An outstanding academic record and motivation to build a career in academia, industrial R&D, or biotechnology entrepreneurship are essential. Nice-to-have skills include experience with in vivo techniques and completion of an accredited laboratory animal science course. The workplace offers professional development support, a sustainable and climate-neutral environment, public transport season tickets, car sharing, sports facilities, childcare, attractive pension benefits, and an inclusive culture with equal opportunity. What the role asks for: - Strong skills in molecular and cell biology techniques - Cultivation and engineering of primary human cells and mammalian cell lines - Outstanding academic record - Motivation to build a career in academia, industrial R&D or biotechnology entrepreneurship - Experience with in vivo techniques (nice to have) - Completion of an accredited laboratory animal science course (FELASA / LTK or equivalent) (nice to have)
