PhD position NCCR Genesis: combining remote and in-situ life detection techniques

The PhD project, part of the NCCR Genesis programme at the University of Bern, is hosted by the Centre for Space and Habitability, a hub that tackles fundamental space‑science questions through interdisciplinary research. The role will focus on merging remote sensing and in‑situ techniques for detecting life, linking microbiological analyses with laser‑based mass‑spectrometry studies. Each day the researcher will conduct laboratory work on microorganisms in the Microbiology Laboratory of the University of Neuchâtel, while also performing organic‑compound mass‑spectrometry at the Space Research and Planetary Sciences division. The position involves close cooperation with national and international partners, including colleagues at NASA Ames, to integrate experimental data from both approaches. Applicants must hold a master’s degree in physics, chemistry or biology and be eager to acquire microbiological methods; previous wet‑lab experience is advantageous. Fluency in spoken and written English is required. Although no prior optics expertise is needed, a basic grasp of polarization, vacuum technology or mass spectrometry is considered a plus. The appointment is funded for four years, with a gross salary that rises from roughly CHF 50 042 in the first year to CHF 53 263 by the end.
