Electrical Design Technician (EN-EL-DDO-2026-218-GRAE)

CERN’s Electrical Engineering Group maintains the accelerator’s power‑distribution network, fibre‑optic links and signal cabling, and the Design and Documentation Office is looking for a junior Electrical Design Technician. In this support role you will assist senior designers by producing and updating electrical schematics and by contributing to low‑voltage distribution projects. Your daily work will involve generating design drawings with CAD tools, carrying out low‑voltage network calculations using ElecCalc, Caneco BT or comparable software, and preparing material lists and cabling tables in Excel. You will also keep design templates current, handle quality‑related tasks in the office and help manage the printing facilities, gradually taking on more complex design assignments. The position requires up to two years of professional experience after completing secondary education in electrical engineering or a related discipline, and you must not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract. Essential skills include experience in low‑voltage network design, cable sizing and selectivity studies, competence in AutoCAD or a similar program, and an intermediate level of Microsoft Excel. You need a solid grasp of European LV standards, protection concepts, earthing systems and basic power‑system calculations, as well as proficiency in English or French with a willingness to learn the other language. A valid driving licence and the ability to work in radiation zones and underground installations are also mandatory. Additional assets are familiarity with lighting design tools such as DIALux, experience with E‑PLAN or medium‑voltage design, and motivation even without prior design‑office exposure. The contract lasts 24 months, extendable to 36, is fully onsite, and starts on 1 January 2027.
