PhD position in Modeling and Control of Nonlinear Dynamical Systems from Data

The Chair in Nonlinear Dynamics at ETH Zürich is seeking a candidate for a PhD position focused on developing and applying nonlinear dynamical systems methods to complex physical problems. The company, a renowned institution, aims to provide efficient and theoretically sound alternatives to black-box approaches like neural networks. The selected candidate will work on further developing spectral submanifold methods, with possible research directions including nonlinear modeling and control approaches for various systems such as fluid-structure interactions and soft robotics. To be considered for this position, candidates must have a master's degree in a relevant field like mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, or physics, along with strong mathematical skills. Prior research experience in related areas such as fluid mechanics or model reduction is expected, while experience in nonlinear dynamical systems methods and data-driven analysis is a plus. The PhD position will be based at either the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering or the Department of Mathematics, depending on the candidate's background. ETH Zürich offers numerous benefits, including public transport season tickets and childcare, and values diversity and sustainability, promoting an inclusive culture and working towards a climate-neutral future.
