The role of Online Software Developer at CERN focuses on upgrading the CMS data‑acquisition system for the High‑Luminosity LHC. In this position you will design and implement software that runs on FPGA‑based electronics, enabling configuration, control and monitoring of the Trigger and Timing Control and Distribution System (TCDS). You will join a multidisciplinary team of electronics engineers, physicists and other stakeholders, contributing to the overall mission of delivering a production‑ready system by 2028. Day‑to‑day you will develop code that configures, controls and monitors the various TCDS components, working closely with hardware. You will help set up and operate DAQ test benches to validate designs, maintain and enhance software repositories, and improve the CI/CD pipeline that supports continuous integration and deployment. In later phases you will assist with the installation and commissioning of the Phase‑2 DAQ system between 2027 and 2029 and provide support to the wider CMS community during sub‑detector commissioning. The position requires solid expertise in Python and modern C++, as well as experience with system programming that interacts directly with computer hardware. You must have a proven track record of collaborative software development and familiarity with DevOps practices, including CI/CD. Strong written and spoken English is essential, and you should be prepared to learn French. Eligibility is limited to nationals of CERN Member or Associate Member States who have never held a CERN fellow or graduate contract. CERN offers a hybrid work model, a 24‑month contract (extendable to 36 months), and a 40‑hour work week with occasional night, Sunday and holiday duties when required. The compensation package includes a monthly net stipend, comprehensive health insurance, pension membership, relocation assistance and language training. You will be part of an inclusive, international environment that values diversity and encourages scientific curiosity. What the role asks for: - National of a CERN Member or Associate Member State - No prior CERN fellow or graduate contract - Master's (2‑6 yr) or PhD (≤3 yr) in Software Engineering or Applied Physics - Proficiency in Python and modern C++ - Experience in system programming and hardware interaction - Experience in collaborative development and CI/CD practices - Fluent spoken and written English; willingness to learn French - Nice‑to‑have: familiarity with VHDL/Verilog and HEP data‑acquisition challenges
