Data Science Officer

The Data Science Officer will work at PAGES, a global paleoscience network, hosted by the University of Bern. The role involves supporting the network's working groups in managing, standardising, and analysing paleoscience data, and contributing to the development of the network's products, publications, and outreach efforts. The main tasks include providing data science support, managing a scholarship program, ensuring data meets standards, and editing publications. The role also involves coordinating international activities and representing PAGES. The officer will contribute to publications, both within working groups and through independent research. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in a relevant field such as paleoscience, data science, statistics, or a computational discipline. Strong programming skills in R and Python, along with experience in version control and reproducible workflows, are essential. The role requires expertise in handling large, diverse datasets and managing incomplete or unevenly sampled time series. Excellent communication skills are crucial, as the officer will need to explain complex methods to non-specialists. Experience with specific databases and tools like PANGAEA, NOAA, Neotoma, LiPD, and age-depth modeling is beneficial. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite is also an asset. The position is based in Bern, Switzerland, and offers the opportunity to work in an international, collaborative environment.
