The role is for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Embedded Hardware, FPGA, Edge AI, and Smart Sensors at ETH Zurich. The institution, D-ITET PBL, focuses on embedded systems, Edge AI, TinyML, smart sensing, FPGA-based systems, autonomous robots, and drones. The researcher will contribute to both research and teaching, working on developing complete embedded systems from sensor selection to deployment of algorithms. The main day-to-day responsibilities include developing embedded systems, from selecting sensors and processors to designing PCBs, implementing FPGA/MCU, developing firmware, debugging hardware, and deploying signal-processing and machine-learning algorithms. Additionally, the role involves teaching and supervising students in areas such as embedded systems, FPGA design, electronics, and machine learning on microcontrollers. The researcher will also create hands-on laboratory exercises, supervise projects, and support large project-based learning activities. To qualify, candidates must have a PhD in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field. Essential requirements include a strong practical background in embedded hardware, experience in FPGA design, PCB design, and integration of various sensors and processors. Proficiency in embedded programming in C/C++, real-time signal processing, and hardware-aware AI is also necessary. Familiarity with interfaces like SPI, I2C, and USB, as well as the use of hardware debugging tools, is crucial. Experience or interest in Edge AI, TinyML, and embedded machine learning is also required. Nice-to-have skills include experience in European project preparation or management, particularly for those interested in a more senior role. The position is based in Zurich and offers a collaborative environment with opportunities for growth in both research and teaching. The role involves a significant amount of teaching and student supervision, making it suitable for those who enjoy working with students and see teaching as an integral part of their work. What the role asks for: - A PhD in Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field. - Strong practical embedded hardware background. - Experience in FPGA design and implementation, including HDL development. - Experience in PCB schematic design, layout, board bring-up, debugging, and validation. - Experience in embedded programming in C/C++. - Experience in real-time signal processing and embedded perception, hardware-aware AI. - Experience with interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, USB, Ethernet, MIPI, or similar. - Experience using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power analyzers, and hardware debugging tools. - Experience in deployment and optimization of machine-learning models on resource-constrained hardware. - Experience or strong interest in Edge AI, TinyML, embedded machine learning, neuromorphic computing, or signal processing. - Experience in European project preparation or management (nice-to-have).
