The Centre for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich runs a think‑tank that bridges academic research and practical security policy. Within its Mediation and Peace Section, the joint "Culture and Religion in Mediation" (CARIM) programme, a partnership with the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, is looking for a (Senior) Program Officer. The role is a fixed‑term appointment based in central Zurich, with a workload ranging from 80 % to full time. The officer will help roll out CARIM's activities and may take the lead on selected tasks. Core duties include managing knowledge assets and conducting applied research on mediation processes, designing and delivering training modules on negotiation and capacity building, and offering hands‑on assistance for conflict analysis, dialogue and mediation in varied settings. The position also supports the education of upcoming mediators through existing courses such as Peace Mediation and MAS Mediation, while tailoring new programmes to specific contexts. A special focus is placed on how narratives and legal traditions shape conflict dynamics and negotiation outcomes. In addition, the role involves coordinating organisational matters, overseeing programme management, and expanding the network and knowledge base that links research with practice. Candidates must hold a master's degree in a relevant social‑science or humanities discipline such as peace and conflict studies, political science, sociology, anthropology or environmental studies. At least three years of professional experience in mediation support, project management or applied research within the peace‑and‑conflict arena are required. Applicants should have lived and worked in environments affected by conflict and have concrete experience in conflict‑transformation activities. A proven record of writing, publishing and editing applied research is essential, as is prior work for international organisations, NGOs or think‑tanks dealing with mediation. Experience with intercultural dimensions and narrative work in mediation contexts is also mandatory. Strong analytical, organisational and interpersonal abilities, a proactive attitude, and the capacity to operate both independently and within a team are expected. Fluency in English at a professional level is compulsory, while knowledge of a Swiss national language is considered a valuable addition; any further language skills are welcomed. The position offers a two‑year contract with the possibility of extension, depending on funding and mutual agreement. The workplace is located in Zurich's city centre and provides attractive working conditions typical of a university‑affiliated think‑tank. Employees can deepen their mediation and research expertise, receive further training, and publish their findings in diverse formats. Travel, including trips to conflict‑affected regions, is part of the job. ETH Zurich promotes an inclusive, diverse and sustainable work environment, emphasizing equal opportunity and a climate‑neutral future. What the role asks for: - MA in peace/conflict studies or related social science - Minimum three years mediation, project management or research experience - Worked and lived in conflict‑affected environments - Produced and edited applied research publications - Experience in international NGOs, think tanks or similar organisations - Skilled in intercultural dimensions and narrative analysis in mediation - Excellent command of English (professional level) - Willingness to travel, including to conflict zones - Strong analytical, organisational and interpersonal abilities - Ability to work proactively both independently and in teams - Proficiency in a Swiss national language (nice‑to‑have) - Additional language skills are advantageous (nice‑to‑have)
